Red Lantern Corps Bio

Since the birth of the Green Lantern concept in the 1940’s the series has been a comic sci-fi hit. As many series have their ups and downs, GL has been pretty consistent. However, great heroes need great enemies and I cannot fathom why it took so long for the creative minds to make the Sinestro Corps, the corps that wields the yellow ring. But why stop there? In today’s bio we leave will power and fear. Today, we look into rage and what kind of corps that creates. See the rage of the Red Lanterns below.
Atrocitus
You may remember me mentioning the massacre of sector 666 by the Guardians of the Universe’s robot police force the Manhunters. I also mentioned that there were only five survivors from this tragedy know as the Five Inversions.
Among them was Atrocitus. He and his brethren vowed vengeance on the Guardians and all who serve them. They performed “blood magic” which allowed them to see into the future. They were the ones who prophesized the Blackest Night. Abin Sur, Hal Jordan’s predecessor, believed in the prophecy so much that he frequently visited the Five to learn how to stop it.
He even freed Atrocitus so that he could lead him to Earth, the “birth place of the black”. Atrocitus escapes mortally wounding Abin which allows Hal to become a GL. Sinestro (still a GL) helps Hal capture Atrocitus and re-imprisons him on the planet Ysmault.

Atrocitus spends years on his prison planet where is hatred and anger fester. When he finally frees himself he kills his brothers in a fury which gives birth to the red light of rage. Unlike the green and yellow rings, the red do not form many constructs. They actually vomit red energy that infects people and makes them hate filled. The ring finds those with great rage in there hearts and replaces it with the power of the ring. Basically all of the Red Lanterns (RL’s) with die eventually from this power.
All RL’s but Atrocitus seem to be so blinded by rage that they cannot form coherent speech. Red is on the outer edge of the emotional spectrum which means that it is harder to control. Think about ROYGBIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet) that you learned in art class as a kid. The further from the center of the emotional spectrum the worse off you may be.
Red Lantern Oath
“With blood and rage of crimson red,
Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead,
Together with our hellish hate,
We’ll burn you all–
That is your fate!”
The red light makes things very interesting in the war of light. It can even pass through a GL or Sinestro Corps members shield to infect them. The infected can only be cured by the cooling blue light. What is the blue light? I guess that you will have to check back and see. Be sure to read our bios on the Green Lanterns and the Sinestro Corps.
