Our last post talked about Zack Snyder’s director’s cut for Watchmen which will hit theaters next month. Now we have news about Snyder’s involvement in a sequel to his Spartan action movie 300. Snyder talked with ComingSoon.net about the upcoming Blu-Ray release for Watchmen as well as a special edition for 300. He talked about Frank Miller writing a sequel to his graphic novel which Snyder brought to the screen in 2006. 300 went on to gross over $200 million domestically and now we have talks for a sequel. Continue reading to check out what Snyder had to say about a possible 300 sequel.

“I know for a fact that Frank [Miller] is writing right now,” says Snyder, who explains that the plan is for Miller to create the story as a comic book first, “[He's] drawing away and seems to be knee-deep in it. I think he’s going to head back to Greece again and do another reconnaissance.”

What do you think about Snyder doing a sequel for 300? Results were mixed for his latest project Watchmen, can Snyder make 300 work once again, or was that a one time success? 300 made a ton of money and really put Zack Snyder on the map. If Frank Miller is writing something then I think it has the elements to be another hit. Leave us your thoughts below.

Director Zack Snyder’s graphic novel adaptation of Watchmen will be returning to select theaters next month with an exclusive director’s cut. Watchmen was released this past March and clocked in at almost three hours in it’s original entirety. Now the director’s cut will include an additional 25 minutes of new footage. When Watchmen was released there was a rumor that Snyder would be releasing a director’s cut this summer so fans could see his original cut of the film. Unfortunately, Watchmen will only be playing at four different venues in the following cities: Los Angels, New York, Dallas, and Minneapolis according to Variety. So if you don’t live in those cities you will have to wait until the DVD and Blu-Ray hits stores on July 21st.

We have some serious news to report tonight. During a screening of the superhero movie Watchmen, a 24 year old man shot and killed himself inside the theater. The suicide took place at a Regal theater in Eugene, Oregon just after midnight Monday night. This is not only sad news, but is quite shocking that an individual would do something of this nature in such a public place. Oregon news station KMTR reported that there were only 10 patrons inside the theater, and the closest person to the victim was two rows away. Those watching the movie told management they heard, “a loud popping noise,” and quickly alerted the theater staff who evacuated the auditorium and stopped the screening. There have been no details released as to who the victim was or a reason for his suicide. I know not everyone enjoyed Watchmen, but damn…

The weekend is over, daylight savings time is here, and we have a new top dog at the box office. As expected, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen was number one at the box office, bringing in a hefty $55.6 million. The film, which had an estimated budget of $150 million, lived up to the hype surrounding it. Now, not to be completely negative about this film, but $55 million is not as much as it should have made. What do I mean about what it should have made? Let’s break down the three day run of this film thus far. Watchmen started off stronger than expected with $4.5 million from it’s Thursday night midnight showings. In comparison, Snyder’s last film 300 made about half that amount from it’s midnight shows.

300 had an opening day of about $28 million and in it’s first three days made $70 million. Watchmen on the other hand, had an opening day of $24.9 million, which while less than 300′s opening, was still a strong opening. The problem that Watchmen ran into was how the rest of the weekend played out. Friday was it’s biggest day (this was expected since most of the fanboys skipped work to see it) but it took a sharp decline on Saturday and Sunday. It made only $19 million Saturday and then only $11.5 million on Sunday. Had the film held up for Saturday and Sunday it should have seen an opening in the $65-$75 million range.

Why did this film not remain consistent all weekend? The first reason is that those who really wanted to see it did on Friday. Then it was dependant on finding a new audience to continue it’s big opening day. Everyone knew this film would be a hard sell to the general public, but I would have assumed that curiosity would have brought people in.

The second factor that could have hurt Watchmen’s box office was word of mouth. Rotten Tomatoes is reporting only a 65% fresh rating, which while not bad, still isn’t as good as it should be. Word of mouth can make a movie sink or swim. Liam Neeson’s thriller Taken was a huge success due to strong word of mouth. The film has seen very small declines from one week to the next. This is what is going to ultimately kill Watchmen. I predicted from the beginning a huge opening (I predicted $75 million – which it should have came close too) and I am now predicting a steep decline come next weekend.

This Friday we will predict the openings for the new horror remake The Last House on the Left, the Rock’s new kid flick, Race to Witch Mountain, as well as the second week expectations of Watchmen.

In it’s first day of release, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen has officially taken off. Bringing in $24.9 million on Friday, this film is poised to do some big business this weekend. With a great midnight show turnout ( $4.5 million), Watchmen had the the fifth highest grossing day for an R rated film. It stands behind The Matrix Reloaded, Passion of the Christ, 300, and Sex and the City. Director Zack Snyder’s last film, 300, made $28.1 on it’s opening day two years ago. So we will have to wait and see if Watchmen can make enough cash to match the $70 million that 300 made it’s opening weekend. As far as other comparisons go, Watchmen had the 32nd highest grossing day of all time, as well as the 8th highest grossing day for a superhero movie. Check back with us tomorrow night when we will bring you a complete recap of the weekend box office.

Everyone has been asking me what my opinion is of Watchmen. Whenever these people ask me, they have a huge smile on their face, and their excitement is quickly halted when I tell them that I thought the movie was, “just alright.” This apparently translates to most people as, “I hated the movie” – which is not the case. So I figured I would take the opportunity to explain my feelings on the film. Roman officially reviewed the film yesterday – and while I agree with the points he made, I have a different position which I would like to share. Where Roman is a Watchmen fanboy, I am the new kid on the block. My Watchmen knowledge is limited to reading the novel (which I finished shortly before screening the film.) I had no strong feelings going into the film yet I was very underwhelmed with the novel. I had little expectations so I was by no means disappointed, however the novel feels very anti-climactic to me. It is a character study. And these are some of the most interesting characters I have ever read about.

I think character development is important to any story, but so is an interesting story line. This movie is taken literally from the pages of the novel. It is so accurate that the fans will have nothing to gripe about – but at the same time this is the movie’s biggest downfall. The novel is considered to be completely unfilmable and the film really lives up to that statement. It is not entertaining to watch. It suffers the one downfall which is most devastating for any film. It is boring. Now before you crucify me for making this blasphemous statement let me explain myself.

Zack Snyder did an incredible job bringing this story to the big screen. Wait a minute didn’t I just pan this movie? Not at all. In all actuality the movie is better than most films currently playing at the theater. The movie is an experience that I think is worth the price of admission and if for any reason it is a great film to discuss. Given the source material I honestly believe that Snyder did everything he could to make this film as enjoyable as possible. I do not blame him. I just think the story is not meant to be a movie. It is a celebrated graphic novel and that should have remained sacred.

Not that I have some love for the book ( the book and the movie are one in the same.) Its all style over substance for me. Watchmen has incredible effects, interesting characters, a dark intriguing premise, but ultimately has no story to follow. Its not that I didn’t “get” the story. I understand it. I actually appreciate it. I applaud Zack Snyder for a job well done. I just don’t buy all the hype. I can’t jump on the bandwagon. This film was made for a specific audience and that is those who love the book. I am sure there are those who have not read the book who will enjoy this because it looks real neat. Yeah, I generalized the film by calling it real neat.

My problem with this film is all they hype that is surrounding it. I think hype can make things exciting, but if the product doesn’t live up to the hype that it projects – then the audience is left without a reward. In the end you may walk out of the theater with an appreciation of what you just saw, as I did, because Zack Snyder deserves praise for his direction. But when it is all said and done – the film will not hold up to the test of time.

March 6, 2009

The box office is about to get interesting. The last few weeks have seen some lackluster films, (Madea Goes to Jail, Jonas Brothers) but all that is now going to change. The weekend box office report is back with a vengeance because of one monstrous film which Is bound to make a killing. That film is Watchmen. For this being a notoriously slow time of year for the box office, Watchmen may be the juice needed to give the dismal box office some life. This is the only major wide release this weekend and it not only has the weekend to itself – but pretty much the entire market since there is really no competition. So what kind of numbers can we expect the Watchmen to bring in? Let’s do some comparisons to see what we can expect these next three days.

This same weekend in March of 2007 Zack Snyder’s 300 hit theaters and completely smashed all box office records for the month of March. The stylized film based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller opened with an astonishing $70 million and went on to gross over $200 million in it’s box office run. Can Watchmen do similar numbers in it’s opening weekend? We will get to that in a few.

The prognosis is mixed for this one. Watchmen is a hard sell (even more so than 300). Alan Moore’s famous graphic novel has been considered an unfilmable story. The novel was a twelve issue series that was first published in 1986, and now over 20 years later director Zack Snyder has chosen to film this movie, and challenge the world to see if he can indeed make this movie watchable. So what does this movie have going for it? First, it has a huge following. Midnight shows across the country sold out last night and the pre-sales for this movie were higher than 300 before it was released.

Can this movie attract more than the fanboy audience? I think the opening weekend will be huge. The buzz for this film is huge and everywhere you look there is a good chance you will see a person reading the bright yellow covered novel. It is the hype that is building for this movie that is going to fill theater seats. Whether you are a fan – or if you even know what the hell Watchmen is; you gotta go check it out just so yo can talk about it at the water cooler come Monday morning. People still do that right? So chances are you will get on the bandwagon (if you aren’t already) and you will be the reason Watchmen is number one this weekend.

Weekend Prediction: $75 million.
