Star Trek was one of the best franchise reboots in recent years. It told a great story, handled the time-travel plot device much better then other films, collected a great cast, and gave sci-fi fans awesome space action. Inevitably, sequel talks have been flying all over the internet, with rumors and conjecture ranging from storyline to characters. Comingsoon got wind of a juicy rumor, and it’s got a lot of potential to be the real deal. It centers around who might be playing the character of Khan in the next film. Check out the rumored actor below.

Nestor Carbonell, of Lost and The Dark Knight, is being thrown around as a pick for Kirk’s nemesis in the next movie. He and J.J. Abrams, director of Star Trek, go back a ways, as J.J. is an executive producer on Lost. He is a good actor, popping up in other projects including Smokin’ Aces and the live-action version of The Tick. A lot of rumors will continue to roll around, so we’ll keep you posted when the official word breaks on Star Trek 2.

Star Trek is coming back to IMAX theaters this Labor Day weekend! The J.J Abrams blockbuster was released in both regular and IMAX theaters this past May and became an instant success. Grossing over $250 million at the domestic box office, Star Trek was both a financial and critical success. Starting this Friday September 4th, Trek will be released at about 100 IMAX theaters across the country for a two week run. This is apparently a last minute marketing campaign from Paramount to end the summer on a high note. Star Trek stars Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk in a reboot of the popular sci-fi franchise. The movie has become one of the highest grossing movies of the summer and Paramount is getting ready to give the film a little extra push this holiday weekend. Go check out Star Trek in IMAX!

What a huge summer it is shaping up to be! Week one saw Wolverine hit $85 million opening weekend. Week two witnessed the rebirth of the Star Trek franchise with $79 million in its’ first weekend. Now The Da Vinci Code sequel Angels & Demons hit theaters this past Friday with an expected gross of around $46 million. This pales in comparison to the $77 million that Da Vinci Code opened with in 2006, but it was still enough to top the weekend box office. Ron Howard’s adaptation of the Dan Brown novel may have ruled the box office but it barely beat the starship enterprise which made a whopping $43 million in its’ second week of release. This was a decline of only 42% from its’ opening and after only two weeks of release J. J Abrams’ Star Trek has grossed an impressive $147 million.

Here is what the rest of the weekend box office looked like:

Falling another 43% in week three X-Men Origins: Wolverine made another $14 million which puts its’ total gross thus far at a strong $150 million.

The romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past has seen a successful run in the midst of all these big budget summer films. The Matthew Mcconaughey rom com made another $6 million for a fourth place finish.

Rounding out the top five was the Beyonce thriller Obsessed which brought in another $4.5 million taking its’ gross to over $60 million.

Next weekend is gearing up to be a huge Memorial Day holiday for the box office. The Ben Stiller sequel Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian arrives on Friday and the day before that is Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation. Look for these two movies to completely tear up the box office. With something for kids and adults this should be a record breaking weekend. Look for our full coverage next weekend with our box office report.

As if the initial estimate of $72 million wasn’t exceeding expectations, we have even more money to add to that total. Reports are now coming in stating that J.J Abrams’ Star Trek grossed a whopping $79.2 million over the weekend. Most predictions placed the sci-fi reboot in the mid to high $60 million range. For any movie to rake in almost $80 million is an impressive accomplishment; but for a reboot of a 1970′s television show, with no big name stars, is even more incredible. This film will certainly perform well over the coming weeks as positive reviews continue to roll in, and the word of mouth has brought in all different demographics to fill theater seats. I look forward to seeing the competition between Star Trek and Angels & Demons this weekend – who do you think will come out on top?

Live long and prosper? Looks like J.J Abrams’ new Star Trek movie is set to do just that. With an opening weekend of $72.6 million (with Thursday night showings you can tack $4 million more to that number) the Star Trek reboot opened bigger than any Star Trek film in history. To put it in perspective for you, the J.J Abrams’ directed Star Trek completely smashed all other Trek films in years past. The last Trek movie was Star Trek: Nemesis which made $43 million in its entire run. The new Star Trek almost doubled that number in just three days. This is an impressive feat for a movie which had no big name stars and a director who is responsible for more television hits than big screen movies.

Abrams’ Star Trek will soon become the highest grossing Trek film of all time. The current holder for that title is Star Trek: First Contact which grossed $92 million in 1996. Fans lined up to see the reboot of the famous tv show and based upon word of mouth, are enjoying the movie. Critically speaking the movie is great. Rotten Tomatoes has the film ranked with a 96% fresh rating which makes it the best reviewed film so far this year. With last weekends X-Men Origins: Wolverine grossing $85 million opening weekend, and now Star Trek with over $70 million, summer is definitely starting off with a bang. Here is how the rest of the weekend box office looked:

Coming in at a distant number two was last weekend’s champ Wolverine which suffered a 68% decline in week 2 which meant only $27 million over the weekend. The movie has endured horrible reviews so this number is not surprising. After two weeks of release Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine stands at a strong $129 million.

The number three spot went to Ghosts of Girlfriends Past which made another $10 million this weekend. After two weeks the romantic comedy has drummed up $30 million from moviegoers. The fourth and fifth spot went to April holdovers Obsessed and 17 Again respectively. Obsessed made another $6.6 million while Zac Efron’s 17 Again made $4 million in its fourth week of release.

The weekend box office was up a stellar 22% percent compared to this weekend last year when Speed Racer crashed and burned on opening weekend. Next weekend should see even more $$ at the box office when The Da Vinci Code sequel Angels & Demons arrives in theaters.

I have been and always shall be a fan of the Star Trek franchise. When I was younger I always thought it would be great to join star fleet and explore the galaxy; it’s the one geeky vice I have. The first movie to pop my Star Trek cherry was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Ever since then I’ve enjoyed watching the crew of the Enterprise. My favorite cast of any Star Trek movie or show is by far the original crew starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. When I heard that they were doing a reboot of the movie franchise without the original crew, naturally I was both excited and worried. I don’t claim to be the biggest trekkie in the world, but there are some basic concepts that every trekkie should be aware of with regards to this film franchise. And knowing these concepts, I was a little worried that J.J. Abrams might take the risk of ignoring the standard that’s been set by the original movies. I am happy to say that J.J. Abrams, for the most part, made a good Star Trek film.

I thought that the new cast did a good job portraying the characters we’ve come to know and love. The best portrayal coming from Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy, with the worst coming from Zachary Quinto as Spock (that’s not to say he was bad, just not the best comparatively speaking). I thought the storyline was very good, and this plot allows for many new movies to be made without having to worry about the original storylines of the previous films or episodes. J.J Abrams was able to strike a decent balance between appeasing trekkies, while making the film mainstream enough to be lucrative, and gain a new generation of fans.

What I didn’t see in this movie, which I hope will be in the next, is the symbolic relationship between Kirk, McCoy, and Spock. These three represent a trichotomy where McCoy represents the emotional side of Kirk, with Spock being the logical. What I also hope to see in the next film, is an end to a certain relationship that was introduced to us that I know many trekkies won’t appreciate (if you’ve seen the movie, then you’ll know what I’m talking about). I know that I might be going out on a limb here, but I would love to see the future films reintroduce some of the more lovable villains like the Klingons or Khan (being one of the best villains in my humble opinion). It would also be nice to see the Enterprise in a dog fight with another equally matched ship.

Overall, the film was good and I’m sure trekkies around the world will not be disappointed. The movie wasn’t just action or special effects driven; the movie was well written and it provided a plot that was well within the vain of a Star Trek story. Acting was good and I think the fans will find that this cast did a great job overall. I believe that J.J. Abrams and the entire cast did the original movie franchise justice. If Abrams can produce a sequel that’s on par with this film, than I’m sure there will be many more Star Trek films to come; this new franchise, I’m sure, will live long and prosper.

The 78 year old actor, who reprises his role as the trek fan favorite Spock in the series reboot Star Trek, is such an icon amongst the series that even if the film were to be bad ( which I doubt) people will come see it just to see the real “Spock”. That goes for future additions to the franchise as well. Nimoy had this to say.

After an almost 20 year break from the character Nimoy has come back to the fans and gives us some reasurring comments on his future in the series. ” If J.J. Abrams calls me I answer the phone. I dont say ‘never’ any more” . says the actor. Nimoy did insist that it was “too early to speculate” whether or not he would be getting another call to play his most famous character, but depending on how the film does who can say? Why does he think he can portray Spock a few more times? ” The character is much more relaxed about who he is and what his life should be about whereas (younger Spock) is just beginning to find himself,” said Nimoy of the movie’s mature Spock. “It works extremely well. The character I portray in this film is much more like who I am today, personally. I am as close as possible to the character as I could ever be.” I know I am excited to see this side of Spock and I hope that we get a little back story on where he has been and what his life has been like.

Nimoy also commented on William Shatner, who played the original Captain Kirk and does not appear in the reboot. Shatner told Nimoy ” now we’re even” in regard to appearing in the “Trek” prequel after Shatner cameoed without Nimoy in 1994′s “Star Trek: Generations“.

Sounds like good stuff to this fan boy.

Would you be excited to see more of Lenord Nimoy? Or do we have to see the film and make sure that we even want more? Let us know.

By Jeff Olson
April 7, 2009

Last night in Austin, Texas there was a surprise premiere for Star Trek. Those who were fortunate enough to catch an early screening of the sci-fi film have begun to post reviews on the net. The movie does not open wide until May 8th, but an advanced screening last night in Austin, as well as a special gala and screening in Sydney, Australia have given audiences an early peek at the movie. So what is the initial response to J.J Abrams’ Star Trek? Reviews are popping up all over the place. The Twitter universe went nuts last night with tweets about their initial thoughts of the film. Continue reading to check out what everyone had to say about this much buzzed about film.

Aint it Cool News: “But other than a few conveniences, I think Abrams pulled it off. STAR TREK isn’t just a successful reboot, but a genuinely fun and exciting science fiction action adventure. My biggest complaint is that it feels like they just got started up when the film ended. I want more! I want to see the further adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise.” – Quint, AICN

Film School Rejects: “If there is one thing Star Trek always got right in the old days – and we’re talking The Original Series and the first two films, of which I’m a big fan – it was a commitment to character and story above all else. This movie has that same commitment, but it is muted by an intense sensory experience. This may be a small problem for some fans, but I can assure you that when you get that first gorgeous shot of the USS Enterprise or you are thrust into the midst of a wild space battle, you won’t mind one bit.” – Neil Miller, Film School Rejects

Twitch: “The acting and casting are spot on. The story mixes old and new elements of the Star Trek universe. The effects are breathtaking. Some people will inevitably nitpick this film but J.J. Abrams’ new work is as good as (and arguably better) than most of the Star Trek movies that preceded it.” Rodney Perkins, Twitch

These are just a few of the many reviews that are currently circulating the web. If you were one of the lucky individuals who has seen Star Trek please leave us your thoughts below. We look forward to the release of Star Trek on the 8th of May – and until then we plan on bringing you all things Star Trek, as this is gearing up to be one of the big movies of the summer.
