Star Trek was one of the best franchise reboots in recent years. It told a great story, handled the time-travel plot device much better then other films, collected a great cast, and gave sci-fi fans awesome space action. Inevitably, sequel talks have been flying all over the internet, with rumors and conjecture ranging from storyline to characters. Comingsoon got wind of a juicy rumor, and it’s got a lot of potential to be the real deal. It centers around who might be playing the character of Khan in the next film. Check out the rumored actor below.
Star Trek is coming back to IMAX theaters this Labor Day weekend! The J.J Abrams blockbuster was released in both regular and IMAX theaters this past May and became an instant success. Grossing over $250 million at the domestic box office, Star Trek was both a financial and critical success. Starting this Friday September 4th, Trek will be released at about 100 IMAX theaters across the country for a two week run. This is apparently a last minute marketing campaign from Paramount to end the summer on a high note. Star Trek stars Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk in a reboot of the popular sci-fi franchise. The movie has become one of the highest grossing movies of the summer and Paramount is getting ready to give the film a little extra push this holiday weekend. Go check out Star Trek in IMAX!
What a huge summer it is shaping up to be! Week one saw Wolverine hit $85 million opening weekend. Week two witnessed the rebirth of the Star Trek franchise with $79 million in its’ first weekend. Now The Da Vinci Code sequel Angels & Demons hit theaters this past Friday with an expected gross of around $46 million. This pales in comparison to the $77 million that Da Vinci Code opened with in 2006, but it was still enough to top the weekend box office. Ron Howard’s adaptation of the Dan Brown novel may have ruled the box office but it barely beat the starship enterprise which made a whopping $43 million in its’ second week of release. This was a decline of only 42% from its’ opening and after only two weeks of release J. J Abrams’ Star Trek has grossed an impressive $147 million.
As if the initial estimate of $72 million wasn’t exceeding expectations, we have even more money to add to that total. Reports are now coming in stating that J.J Abrams’ Star Trek grossed a whopping $79.2 million over the weekend. Most predictions placed the sci-fi reboot in the mid to high $60 million range. For any movie to rake in almost $80 million is an impressive accomplishment; but for a reboot of a 1970’s television show, with no big name stars, is even more incredible. This film will certainly perform well over the coming weeks as positive reviews continue to roll in, and the word of mouth has brought in all different demographics to fill theater seats. I look forward to seeing the competition between Star Trek and Angels & Demons this weekend – who do you think will come out on top?
Live long and prosper? Looks like J.J Abrams’ new Star Trek movie is set to do just that. With an opening weekend of $72.6 million (with Thursday night showings you can tack $4 million more to that number) the Star Trek reboot opened bigger than any Star Trek film in history. To put it in perspective for you, the J.J Abrams’ directed Star Trek completely smashed all other Trek films in years past. The last Trek movie was Star Trek: Nemesis which made $43 million in its entire run. The new Star Trek almost doubled that number in just three days. This is an impressive feat for a movie which had no big name stars and a director who is responsible for more television hits than big screen movies.
I have been and always shall be a fan of the Star Trek franchise. When I was younger I always thought it would be great to join star fleet and explore the galaxy; it’s the one geeky vice I have. The first movie to pop my Star Trek cherry was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Ever since then I’ve enjoyed watching the crew of the Enterprise. My favorite cast of any Star Trek movie or show is by far the original crew starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. When I heard that they were doing a reboot of the movie franchise without the original crew, naturally I was both excited and worried. I don’t claim to be the biggest trekkie in the world, but there are some basic concepts that every trekkie should be aware of with regards to this film franchise. And knowing these concepts, I was a little worried that J.J. Abrams might take the risk of ignoring the standard that’s been set by the original movies. I am happy to say that J.J. Abrams, for the most part, made a good Star Trek film.

Included is a full layout of the ship, a tour of the deck and other levels, and interacting with the ship directly by firing the weapons and traveling at warp speed. Click here to check out this unique experience. A must see for all Star Trek fans!
Not too surprising, Lenord Nimoy says that he is ready to do more installments for the Star Trek franchise. The 78 year old actor, who reprises his role as the trek fan favorite Spock in the series reboot Star Trek, is such an icon amongst the series that even if the film were to be bad ( which I doubt) people will come see it just to see the real “Spock”. That goes for future additions to the franchise as well. Nimoy had this to say. Read the rest of this entry »

Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures is already looking into a sequel for Star Trek. The J.J Abrams sci-fi epic doesn’t even hit theaters until May 8th, but the studio is interested in continuing the franchise once again. J.J Abrams is on board to produce, however it is unconfirmed if he will return to the director’s chair. Writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been hired to pen the screenplay as well as receive producing credits. So what will the sequel be about? Kurtzman states that, “We discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.” Is Paramount being rather presumptuous by gearing up for a sequel to a movie that has not been released yet? Leave your thoughts on the next page!

We have four new posters to show you today for J.J Abrams’ Star Trek. These are international posters so we may not get these in the states. It was rumored yesterday that these posters were fan made, but LatinoReview has confirmed today that these posters are indeed released by the studio. The new posters don’t really expand much on the original character posters which we have already seen. They are still cool posters, but I would like to see something different that the same picture of Captain Kirk looking very intense. For those Star Trek fans out there, you will enjoy these!
