A great return to the zombie movie, 28 Days Later showed audiences the terrifying nature of the creatures. Directed by Slumdog Millionaire’s Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later tells the story of a confused recently awakened coma patient, finding London void of the living and riddled with the undead. The gritty urban desolation and rage infested zombies make 28 Days Later a truly authentic and visceral horror movie. Cillian Murphy, who went on to portray Dr. Crane/Scarecrow in Batman Begins, does an excellent job as the terrified patient wondering deserted England looking for survivors.

I was 15 when 28 Days Later came out, and my dad took my friend and me to see it late one school night. We all wanted to see something jumpy, and we made a good pick. While parts of the movie are a bit slow moving, the movie is about survival and sometimes they do get some down time. The movie was one of the first movies to really show zombies not as slow moving cannibals, but as fast moving killers. When Jim, the main character, arrives at his house, the house is empty of life but he finds his dead parents who overdosed when the city was falling apart. It’s a somewhat disturbing yet beautifully shot scene. If you have not scene 28 Days Later, it’s a good zombie flick and really stands out from the rest. Here’s the trailer below.

If Jennifer’s Body is the direction that horror movies are headed then we may all be damned. After last week’s dismal Sorority Row I had higher expectations for a film that was written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody. I think those expectations may have been too high since Cody’s departure to horror is met with Juno like dialogue; but instead of the lovable Ellen Page, we are stuck with Megan Fox. The Transformers star is fun to look at but that novelty wears thin after two hours of her basically teasing the boys on screen, as well as those in the audience. Jennifer’s Body had potential to be a campy horror film, with a dose of light comedy, but instead it was never able to focus on what it wanted to be.

The movie works on some levels. It takes a young, attractive actress like Megan Fox and exploits everything about her that the audience enjoys. There are no misconceptions here. The director, the writer, and probably Ms. Fox herself are aware that she is not a good actress. But she is hot so that is excusable. The sexed up and crazy nature of Fox’s Jennifer is what most of us conjure up when we think of the word “bitch.”

The casting may be the films strongest area. Mean Girls actress Amanda Seyfried plays opposite Fox as her best friend Needy. Seyfried is the polar opposite of Jennifer yet these differences make their characters dynamic to the story. This movie may have not been attempting to go here but it has a theme of high school girls who are friends with one another for no other reason than to make themselves feel better about who they are. Jennifer takes every chance to bring down Needy and then later reels her back in with her friendship and sincerity. I’m sure we all knew someone like that in high school right?

If you don’t already know Jennifer’s Body is about a high school cheerleader who is the victim of a tragic accident which turns her into a demon. Jennifer thrives on the blood of high school boys so she lures them in with the prospect of sex and then devours them in a violent fashion. I think the premise for this film was great. What an interesting spin on the high school horror genre. Instead of having the hot cheerleader being picked off by the crazy killer, we have the hot cheerleader doing the killing. The movie’s problem is its’ execution. It attempts to be hip, fresh, and youthful (similar to Cody’s last script Juno) but here it feels so contrived that it wants to be funny but it is just uncomfortable. The lines that Fox spits out are shocking; but after a while the shock value is gone and we are left with some interesting characters but nowhere for them to go.

Fanboyz Grade: C

At this years Telluride Film Festival a low budget horror film called Paranormal Activity debuted. The film was made for $11,000 and features a cast of unknown actors who filmed the movie in one week. Right away the comparisons to The Blair Witch Project began. Sure, this is another low budget horror movie but the similarities end at that concept. This trailer has begun gaining buzz on the net as horror fans are eagerly awaiting the next Blair Witch Project. Paranormal Activity follows a couple who move into a new house that they believe to be haunted. They become more suspicious and frightened as several disturbing experiences occur. Paramount will release this film on a limited basis beginning September 25th. Check out this must see trailer.

Michael Myers returns in Rob Zombies latest film Halloween II. Stabbing and slashing his way to get back to his sister Laurie,  Michael turns her town into a blood bath again. Laurie still struggles with the events that changed her life last Halloween and this years October 31st looks to be more trick than treat.

This is my message to Rob Zombie: STOP MAKING MOVIES! YOU ARE AWFUL! I hate it when people use their celebrity in one area to break into another. I know that this is his fourth film, but holy hell how does he keep getting work? Sometimes it works out when musicians go into a film career, but this is not one of those times. Zombie is the Uwe Boll (Director of House of the Dead, BloodRayne) of the horror genre. I hope that this movie tanks and film companies start to realize that maybe they should quit hiring him. Alas, because he is Rob Zombie people will hire him and movie goers will give him a chance. If you haven’t gathered, I did not like this movie. There are so few horror films that do anything more than shock these days and I didn’t even really get that. It was pretty much the same thing over and over through out the whole movie. “Hello, I’m Michael Myers. I stab people” The End. That’s the movie. Save yourself $8.00. I’ve seen Zombie’s movies and have yet to be impressed. I do wonder if the writing is just so bad that it takes away from his directing. Hell, I would give him another chance if there was another writer on a project just to make sure that it is his style all around that I don’t like.

As another Halloween approaches we can be sure to expect Lionsgate will have a new Saw movie for audiences to check out. This year marks the sixth anniversary of the franchise which began in 2004 and has become a staple of pop culture. This October Sav VI will arrive in theaters with even more twisted games and unique methods of killing victims. The first teaser trailer for Saw VI has been released and while it doesn’t really introuduce us to anything new, it serves as a reminder that the horror franchise will be returning yet again. There are rumors that Lionsgate will make eight films, but I could see this franchise going even longer than that. As long as people are buying tickets the studio will continue to make the films. The Saw franchise has become a routine every Halloween in theaters across the country. The week before Halloween a new Saw flick is released. This October will see the release of sixth installment in the popular horror franchise. Since October is quickly approaching (summer has really flown by fast, huh?) the studio has debuted the first poster for the movie. This is different than normal posters as it is an animated image which creates the one-sheet through motion. It is not all that appealing. It isn’t bad, but it is not impressive as past posters have been. There really is no sense in describing it. Check it out for yourself after the jump.

Earlier this week we brought you a red band trailer for the new Megan Fox horror movie Jennifer’s Body. The film has been written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody. Her horror/ comedy mix is clever and looks like it may be a fun movie to watch. The film stars Megan Fox, a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon. Megan Fox has a new movie (that doesn’t have giant robots in it) called Jennifer’s Body and we have a first look at the red band trailer for the film due out September 18th. The movie was written by Diablo Cody (Juno) and also stars Amanda Seyfried ( Mean Girls) in a horror movie about a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by the devil. The red band trailer is a violent, sex filled, horror/comedy that hits some good notes. Check this one out and tell us what you think.

The first trailer for a new vampire flick called Daybreakers has hit the net. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe and is set in the future in 2019 when a plague turns the world’s population into vampires. The human population is facing extinction due to the vampires overtaking the world. However, one group of covert vampires have learned that one of them could be the savior for humanity. This trailer looks awesome. I love the style of the camera work and the music really makes this film look creepy. Check this one out and tell us what you think.

The Stepfather is a horror film that was originally made in 1987 and for some reason is now being made for 2009. The trailer has the typical aspects of a horror film. Creepy music, unsuspecting victims, and a hot chick in a bikini. The film is about a teenager who suspects his new stepfather is a murderer. He doesn’t trust the guy, yet everyone else does. It looks like the usual predictable formula, but that formula is effective. Check out the trailer after the jump.
