What’s Halloween without yet another Saw movie opening in theaters? This time around Saw went 3D and for it’s seventh outing, the horror movie opened to a mild $22.5 million. That is better than Saw VI which last year debuted with a weak $14 million and went on to only gross $27.6 million. The Saw franchise is a mystery to me. What began as a very simple concept: two men trapped in a bathroom, chained to wall, with a sadistic killer manipulating their every move, has gone so over-the-top that it isn’t even the same type of film it began as. I enjoyed the first Saw for how original it was but the franchise progressively became worse and worse as each movie hit theaters. It is a box office draw though, and with Saw VII supposed to be the final chapter, it wouldn’t surprise me if we witnessed a Saw VII in the near future (as in next October.)

Saw VII was the only major new release this weekend but other films like Paranormal Activity 2 and Red held up strong in week 2 and 3 respectively.

Last weeks number one film Paranormal Activity 2 dropped 59.4% in week 2 yet still grossed a strong $16.5 million. With a budget of only $3 million PA 2 has grossed $65.6 million to date.

Number three spot went to Red which brought in another $10 million this weekend. After three weeks the action movie starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich has earned $58.9 million.

Jackass 3D dropped to number four with another $8.4 million which pushes its gross over the hundred million dollar mark. After three weeks the boys of Jackass have earned an impressive $101.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter which earned $6.3 million. The supernatural film starring Matt Damon has earned $22.2 million yet has an estimated budget of $50 million.

A second full length trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 has arrived online via Yahoo. The sequel to last year’s sleeper hit will open in theaters on midnight October 21st and should be a big draw after the first film grossed over $100 million. For the sequel, it is a similar set-up as the first movie, with a spirit haunting a family’s suburban home. Last time it was just a married couple. This time we have an entire family including a baby and a dog.

The trailer looks pretty creepy. Hopefully the movie can be as good as the first film. Watch the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 and let us know if you plan to check this one out in theaters.

The first movie trailer (and poster) for the new horror flick Devil hit the net last night. The trailer boasts that Devil is from the mind of M.Night Shyamalan, which before a slump of recent failures, used to actually mean something. With Devil, Shyamalan is only acting as producer, not writer and director. Devil takes place in a high rise building’s elevator where five people are trapped after the elevator malfunctions. One of them is the devil, but we don’t know who. I gotta say, this trailer is very intense. Could be a great scary movie. Check it out after the jump.

Devil is directed by brothers Drew and John Eric Dowdle who previously brought audiences Quarantine. Check out Devil in theaters September 17th.

One of the best success stories at the Box Office this year is the small scale horror flick Paranormal Activity. Directed and starring Hollywood nobodies, and made on a budget of less than $20,000, the movie uses simple visual effects to give the audience good horror chills. Even Stephen Spielberg has said he experienced some haunting events when having a personal screening of the film.

Paranormal Activity centers around Micah and Katie documenting strange occurrences happening to her in their house. As the documentary continues, Micah grows more upset at the seemingly malevolent spirit, and it begins to act out more and more violently. Eventually, Katie and Micah face the demon head-on.

My brother used to have a toy that looked very similar to Chucky from Child’s Play, and it scared the hell out of me. A doll that is possessed with a killer’s soul is something that even kids can even understand. It is both funny and disturbing to see an innocent play toy murder people and swear constantly. Check out Child’s Play if you’re looking for a good scare this Halloween.

One of the best zombie movies of all time, Shaun of the Dead mixed comedy and horror in a way rarely seen in film. You laugh just as much as you squirm. British comedy men Simon Pegg and Nick Frost play two guys seeking shelter with friends from a zombie outbreak in the safest place they know, their favorite pub. If you have not seen this film, it is by far a must watch. Check out the trailer below.

Witches suck, especially when it’s witches who are looking to suck the souls of children to feed their eternal youth. In Hocus Pocus, three Salem witches were put to death for stealing the life-force from children 300 years ago, but when youthfully stupid Max lights a magic candle, they come back to life on Halloween night. Can this group of teenagers and kids stop the three Sanderson Sisters from absorbing their lives before sunlight? Will Max and a talking cat named Binx be able to hold off the witches and stop their sinister plans? Watch Hocus Pocus this Halloween to find out.

Disturbing and shocking, Hard Candy is so psychologically sickening that it deserves to make the Halloween list. It does not have the ghosts and demons we see in supernatural flicks, but instead shows the audience true monsters that exist in our world. Themes of voyeurism and pedophilia are treated accurately, which is why it is so disturbing. Ellen Page, before gaining fame in Juno and X-Men: The Last Stand, does an incredible job playing cat and mouse with Watchmen‘s Patrick Wilson. If you are looking for a truly stomach-churning movie, check out Hard Candy.

As a kid, I really had a hard time enjoying Gremlins. A kid down the street had a stuffed animal that looked like Gizmo, and for some reason I had this fear that it was somehow actually a gremlin. Needless to say, I never got near that stupid thing. But for Halloween, a good creature flick is always a pretty good decision.

Gremlins centers around the idea that a good gift for seemingly responsible teenagers are strange creatures that potentially can spawn evil monsters. That’s really what it all boils down to. Mogwai have three rules: don’t let them get wet, keep them out of sunlight, and never feed them after midnight. A little high maintenance if you ask me. Trailer for Gremlins is below.

Crazy people make Halloween fun. When author Paul Sheldon is rescued from the snow after his car gets in an accident, he quickly learns the Good Samaritan is such a fan that she never wants him to leave. Being helpless in the hands of a total stranger is scary enough, but when the stranger is a maniac that is set on never letting you go, that’s something else.

Whenever people think about this movie, almost everyone thinks about the scene where Kathy Bates goes nuts and takes a sledgehammer to James Caan. It’s a gruesome shot, and makes you cringe knowing what’s about to happen. Check out the scene below.
