Numerous sites have been reporting as late as this morning that John Krasinski was about to be cast as Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming First Avenger film. Fans of the hero seemed split on the casting, as many have difficulty seeing him as an action hero after seeing him on The Office and more seriously in Away We Go. Now, according to Mike Fleming, almost all the actors going out for the role have been scrapped and are looking elsewhere. It appears that Marvel and director Joe Johnston have focused on three actors to play Steve Rogers. Who are the finalists? Check out the contenders after the jump.

The turmoil surrounding the Farrelly Brother’s movie The Three Stooges has hit a new level. Earlier this summer we reported that Sean Penn was taking a break from Hollywood and would therefore be dropping out of Three Stooges. Penn’s departure leaved an opening for the role of Larry which has now been filled by actor Paul Giamatti according to The Boston Globe. This project has appeared doomed from the start. Casting has taken a very long time and now news has broke that Jim Carrey has also left the production. There is no word yet as to why Carrey dropped out or who will be his replacement. Carrey was cast to play Curly and had reportedly gained weight to look the part. Now that Penn and Carrey are both out is this project ever going to see the light of day?

Today we have news to report on the movie and that is actor Michael Sheen will be joining the cast as the film’s villain. Walt Disney Pictures confirmed the news today via Twitter that the Frost/ Nixon actor will be joining the Tron cast as a villain that “is in fact not a person at all.”
Variety is reporting that Denzel Washington has dropped out of director Tony Scott’s new project titled Unstoppable. The movie was set to co-star actor Chris Pine (Star Trek). Money disputes are supposedly the reason for Washington’s departure. Fox had been trimming down the budget for the film for a few months now, and the last straw was the studio attempting to cut down his salary of $20 million down to $16 million. Washington refused to accept a cut in his pay and left the project. The actor has teamed up with Tony Scott in numerous projects including this summers The Taking of Pelham 123. Unstoppable is about a veteran engineer (Washington) who jumps into a locomotive with a young conductor (Pine) to halt an unmanned runaway train filled with a toxic chemical.

British actor Bill Nighy recently told a British publisher called The Independent that he has been cast in the two-part, seventh installment, of the Harry Potter franchise. Nighy is best known for his roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Underworld will be playing a yet to be identified character in the final film of the series. Nighy had this to say about his involvement: “I don’t think I’m allowed to say it but I’m going to be in the next Harry Potter film,” he told the newspaper. “I won’t say which character, but he’s a goodie. I just got the gig.” Rumor has it that Nighy will be playing Rufus Scrimgeour, a veteran Auror in the Ministry of Magic who spends most of his time fighting Dark Wizards. What do you think?
Fanboy alert! Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, will be joining the cast of Heroes next season. Entertainment Weekly is reporting Park will be a prominent character in a large portion of the story arc during season 4. It is unclear at this time what specific role Ray will portray, but as stated previously, the villain next season is some sort of charismatic cultist, and considering Park’s unparalleled stunt work, he will be someone very physically active perhaps with swords. If Park will be good or evil is unknown, but he plays evil so well, here’s hoping he’s on the dark side.
The last time we saw Jack Nicholson on screen was in 2006’s The Departed. Unless you count the screen time he gets during the Laker games, Nicholson has been a no show on movie screens for a few years now. Variety is reporting that Nicholson will now be returing to the big screen in the yet to be titled romantic comedy by the legendary director James L. Brooks. The movie has already casted Paul Rudd, Reese Whitherspoon, and Owen Willson; and up until recentley Bill Murray was cast to play Rudd’s father. Now it looks like Murray is out and Nicholson is in. This is good news for Nicholson who has won two of his three Oscar’s being a part of Brooks’ films in the past. He won an Oscar for 1983’s Terms of Endearment and 1997’s As Good as It Gets. I am a huge Jack Nicholson fan and am excited for his return. What do you think about Jack being back?
This is starting to feel good. I know I may not have sounded too thrilled about Chris Hemsworth as Thor, but after hearing about Tom Hiddleston being cast as Loki I am getting there. I know that sounds weird, but two no name actors have everything to prove and that could make this film amazing. On the other hand you could argue that they do not have the experience to lead a big budget movie. Its not like these guys have never acted before. Hemsworth was most recently in Star Trek as George Kirk and Hiddleston is an up and coming British actor who has won awards across the pond. Lets not get worried here. He does look the part in the few photos that I could find so I will give him a chance to play the God of Mischief .
The cast for director Christopher Nolan’s newest film, Inception, is coming together. Having already cast Leonardo Dicaprio in the lead role, Nolan has added Joseph Gordon-Levitt to the mix. Gordon-Levitt is best known for his role on the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun, as well as movies like Stop Loss and this summer’s G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra. Gordon-Levitt, along with Leo Dicaprio, will join actors Ellen Page (Juno) and Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins) in a movie being deemed, “contemporary sci-fi action set within the architecture of the mind.” THR is reporting Gordon-Levitt picked up this part after James Franco dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. Inception is due to arrive in theaters July 16, 2010.

High School Musical star Zac Efron has finally been confirmed to play Jonny Quest in a big screen adaptation of the 1960’s cartoon series. Rumors have been floating around for months about a possible film project with Efron playing the title character. Now, we have confirmation that Efron, who can been seen in this week’s comedy 17 Again, will be attached to this movie. There has been harsh criticism from fanboys of the cartoon series that making a big screen adaptation could go the way of Speed Racer, and fans definitely do not want that to happen.

Variety is reporting that Tom Hanks is in negotations to play a live action version of the Mattel action figure, Major Matt Mason. Universal plans to adapt the vintage action figure into a movie with Graham Yost set to write the script. The toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s. Hanks has played an action figure before with his role as Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies, so I am sure he is up for the job to play this old school toy in a live action movie.

We reported earlier this week that 50 Cent would be replacing Oscar winning actor, Forest Whitaker, in the new action film, The Expendables. Directed by Sylvester Stallone, the movie has quite the cast which includes: Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, and a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson was rumored to be replacing Whitaker, but now it appears that 50 is not taking the role, and instead, actor Terry Crews will be stepping in. You probably do not recognize his name, but Crews once played for the San Diego Chargers and made his acting debut in Schwarzeneggers’ The 6th Day.
