AVATAR EXTENDED COLLECTOR’S EDITION

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment Announces Avatar Blu-ray and DVD Global Release Dates

Three-Disc Set of the Worldwide Theatrical and Home Entertainment Phenomenon Contains Even More of the AVATAR Experience with Over Eight Hours of Never-Before-Seen Material and In-Depth Exploration into the World of Pandora!

Director James Cameron is unlocking the secrets of Pandora and taking fans on a guided tour of his vision with the highly anticipated release of AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD releasing November 16th in North America and rolling out internationally from November 15th. These exclusive Extended Collector’s Editions come with iconic, collectible packaging to get fans to experience Pandora like never before. With three versions of the film, AVATAR fans will get an all-new extended cut of the film and hours of never-before seen material including over 45 minutes of amazing deleted scenes!

“I told our team — let’s do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want. There’s an extended length cut that’s sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set,” said James Cameron.

The three-disc AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and Theatrical Special Edition Re-Release DVD will both feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, family audio track with all objectionable language removed and new collector’s extended cut with sixteen more minutes including an exclusive alternate opening Earth scene. Viewers will journey to the depths of Pandora with filmmakers during “Capturing Avatar“ an in-depth feature length documentary covering the 16 year filmmaker journey including all new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau and cast and crew exploring James Cameron’s unique vision for the film seen by more than 310 million people worldwide. The Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

The AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray will also have even more bonus material and interactive viewing. Through the unparalleled, interactive technology of Blu-ray, fans can dive further into the world of the Na’vi and experience the #1 international sensation from behind the scenes, with a “master class” on the production of the film. Leveraging the interactivity of Blu-ray, viewers can experience the full film in three stages of production: Performance Capture, Template (1990’s video game version) and Final as well as a composite of all stages in “Pandora’s Box”. This will be supported with interviews by Jim Cameron and the filmmakers and serve as a “master class” on the making of AVATAR.

Labor Day is next weekend and that represents the official end of the summer movie season. Next weekend we will wrap up the summer with a box office report of the biggest films of summer 2010.

For now, this weekend was a neck-to-neck race between the heist thriller Takers and the horror movie The Last Exorcism. Final numbers will not be in until Monday morning, but for now the estimates show Last Exorcism as the number one movie with $20.3 million and Takers very close behind with $20 million. The other new release this weekend was the re-release of Avatar with extended footage. Avatar added another $4 million for a number 12 opening. Not as good as many anticipated, but let’s not forget: everyone has already seen Avatar at least once.

The top five of the weekend box office looked like this:

Dropping to number three this week (after two weeks at number one) is Stallone’s The Expendables which grossed another $9.5 million. After three weeks of release The Expendables has earned $82 million.

Number four went to Julia Robert’s Eat Pray Love which made another $7 million bringing its total to $60 million.

The comedy The Other Guys starring Will Ferrel and Mark Whalberg rounded out the top five with $6.6 million. After four weeks of release this comedy from director Adam McKay has almost earned $100 million. With $99.3 million in the bank, The Other Guys is definitely a summer hit.

Flickr, the picture-sharing website, has a collection under the name of Avatized. On that account, over 100 photos have been twisted and edited to make the characters of the picture look like Na’vi creatures from the box office smash Avatar.
Jon Landau, producer of Avatar, spoke to MTV about the film and dropped big news concerning the franchise. He said that director James Cameron is going to write a novel detailing the back story of Avatar, giving fans insight into Na’vi/human relations on Pandora, Col. Quaritch and his campaign on the deadly planet, the death of Tommy Sully brother and how Jake ended up in the wheelchair. I think this is a great idea, especially considering the weakest part of the huge hit film was the rushed introduction at the beginning of the movie. Read the comments Jon Landau gave in his interview below.

“It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn’t have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake’s brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that.”

“I don’t think Jim has ever written a novel before, but his first step of writing a script is often in a novella format.”

“I think that what we want to do is find out what mediums those stories are best told in. There might be opportunities in publishing to tell some of the backstory, tell some of the Earth war stories, what went on in Jake’s life before the movie. And we’d have that lead up to the sequel that might take place on Pandora several years after our movie closed.”

He also commented that the story would not be a novelization, or direct retelling of the film’s story in a written format, but an undertaking by itself. Big and epic, just like the everything else James Cameron does. Jon also added that it will likely be published by the end of the year. I always love seeing filmmakers passionate about their craft, and Cameron is showing everyone he cares so much about this story that he’s going to the greatest lengths to handle all the details carefully and personally. Are any Avatar fans excited for the upcoming novel?

For seven weeks Avatar was the top dog at the box office. That was until Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried dropped a romance called Dear John into theaters and teen girls everywhere went to see it. For the last two months Avatar has had little competition at box office and has been the number one movie since it was released on December 18th. This weekend I thought Avatar would make it eight weeks without a struggle ( I actually lost a bet on this); however I apparently underestimate the power of a Nicolas Spark’s novel and a Channing Tatum fan base. Dear John managed to pull in a whopping $30.4 million which is the highest Super Bowl weekend gross of all time. Avatar may have came in second place but it did so at a respectable $22.8 million. Keep reading for a full breakdown of the weekend box office.

Avatar was the favorite going into the weekend to make it eight weeks at number one. That was until Dear John made $13.7 million on Friday. At this point it was clear Avatar was not going to make it to number one. It didn’t help that it was Super Bowl weekend and that Sunday was going to be a day that mostly women would be at the movies.

If it wasn’t for Dear John’s huge Friday numbers Avatar would have gone number one again. Avatar beat John both Saturday and Sunday in the box office race.

The rest of the weekend box office looked like this:

John Travolta failed to find an audience with his action flick From Paris with Love. Directed by Taken’s Pierre Morel, Paris was a box office bomb.

Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness dropped to number four with $6.85 million. After two weeks of release Darkness has grossed $28.9 million.

The fifth spot went to The Tooth Fairy which brought in another $6.6 million over the weekend.

Here is a list of the top ten films at the weekend box office:

1 – Dear John (Sony) – $32.40 ($10,913) – $32.40
2 – Avatar (Fox) – $23.60 ($7,867) – $630.09
3 – From Paris with Love (Fox) – $8.12 ($2,983) – $8.12
4 – Edge of Darkness (Warner Bros.) – $7.01 ($2,285) – $29.10
5 – The Tooth Fairy (Fox) – $6.50 ($2,020) – $34.33
6 – When in Rome (Disney) – $5.50 ($2,241) – $20.90
7 – The Book of Eli (Warner Bros.) – $4.84 ($1,715) – $82.16
8 – Crazy Heart (Fox Searchlight) – $3.65 ($4,457) – $11.19
9 – Legion (Screen Gems) – $3.40 ($1,454) – $34.68
10 – Sherlock Holmes (Warner Bros.) – $2.63 ($1,457) – $201.58

Next weekend should see some big money makers with the arrival of The Wolfman, Valentine’s Day, and Percey Jackson. Check back next Monday for our weekend wrap up of the weekend box office.

If your sick of hearing about how Avatar is breaking all these box office records, then this will probably be one of the last articles we run on the matter. That’s because Avatar has now broken the last big record it had yet to accomplish: highest grossing movie of all time. On Tuesday, Avatar topped Titanic as the highest grossing film ever with over $600 million in domestic box office tickets. If James Cameron was “King of the World” after Titanic’s record-breaking run, then I am not sure what self-inflicted title he will give himself this time around. The man is the mastermind behind the two highest grossing films of all time, so the recognition is warranted. So, how far will Titanic go? Keep reading for our take on it.

On Tuesday Avatar sat at $601.14 million which is just a hair past Titanic which held the record for thirteen years with $600.7 million. In 2008 it appeared that The Dark Knight may have the power to knock Titanic down but it stalled out at an impressive $533 million as the second highest grossing film ever.

The big question now is how far can Avatar go? The movie will be entering its eighth week of release this weekend and should have no problem once again being the number one movie at the box office. As the film shows no signs of really slowing down, it should have no problem crossing $700 million. It is continually breaking the record, week after week, for the highest gross for that week of release. With week number eight coming up I would say it is safe to say Avatar should pull in another $20-25 million. The nine Oscar nominations are only going to push more people into the theater who have yet to see it.

How much do you think Avatar will make? Leave your thoughts below.

Continuing its reign of terror on the box office, Avatar has now made it seven weeks at number one. Grossing $31 million this past weekend, Avatar only dropped 10% from the previous weekend, and is now less than $7 million away from topping Titanic as the highest grossing film of all time. Even with competition from Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness and the romantic comedy When in Rome, Avatar could once again, not be touched. With a domestic gross of $594 million and a worldwide sum of $2 billion Avatar shows no signs of slowing down.

After crossing the $2 billion mark, Avatar became the first movie in history to reach that milestone. By Tuesday, or Wednesday at the latest, Avatar will have passed Titanic in domestic box office sales with over $600 million. I would say the way Avatar has been riding strong, it should have no problem crossing $700 million. These kind of numbers just blow my mind because when you think about it you realize – it is just a movie!

Here is how the rest of the weekend box office ended up:

Mel Gibson returned to the silver screen for the first time since 2002′s Signs. Although Edge of Darkness wasn’t a huge opener, it was a strong debut for the R rated revenge drama, which opened with $17.2 million.

The romantic comedy When in Romeopened at third place with $12.3 million. The movie stars Kirsten Bell and Josh Duhamel.

The fourth spot went to The Tooth Fairy which in its second week grossed $9.9 million. Its total gross to date is $26 million.

Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli took in $8.9 million which put its total gross at $74.5 million.

Below is the top 10 movies at the weekend box office:

1 Avatar $30,000,000 ( $594.4)

2 Edge of Darkness $17,120,000 ($17.1)

3 When in Rome $12,065,000 ($12)

4 Tooth Fairy $10,000,000 ($26.1)

5 Book of Eli $8,770,000 ($74.3)

6 Legion $6,800,000 ($28.6)

7 Lovely Bones $4,735,000 ($38)

8 Sherlock Holmes $4,510,000 ($197.5)

9 Alvin & the Chipmunks 2 $4,000,000 ($209.2)

10 It’s Complicated $3,720,000 ($104)

Following the success of James Cameron’s Avatar has become one of the most interesting stories in box office history. Most importantly because it will soon become the highest grossing film in history as it takes aim at Cameron’s other big film, Titanic. This weekend Avatar made it six straight weekends at number one and on Saturday surpassed The Dark Knight to become the second highest grossing movie of all time. And today we are able to report that Avatar has now topped Titanic internationally to become the highest grossing film worldwide.
Since its release on December 18th, Avatar has remained at number one at the box office for six consecutive weeks. Passing Titanic as the highest grossing film worldwide is an incredible feat for director James Cameron who may not be “king of the world,” but he is undeniably king of the box office. Avatar will soon top the domestic gross of Titanic as the highest grossing movie domestically. Titanic has held the record since its release in 1997 with $600 million. Currently Avatar sits at $551 million and counting. The movie shows no signs of slowing down and to its advantage, the film has virtually no competition on the horizon. Movies like Legion, Extraordinary Measures, and The Tooth Fairy all challenged Avatar but failed miserably this past weekend at the box office.

Legion was the most successful (which is unfortunate because the movie is garbage.) Grossing $17.5 million opening weekend Legion came in at number two.

Close behind was last weekend’s number two movie, The Book of Eli, which fell only 52% making another $15.7 million. After two weeks of release Eli has earned a strong $60.7 million.

The Tooth Fairy which is the latest kids flick from former wrestler turned actor The Rock opened at number four with $14 million.

The number five spot went to Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones which brought in $8.4 million.

The other new wide release of the weekend was the Harrison Ford, Brenden Frasier medical drama Extraordinary Measures which opened with a dismal $6 million for an eighth place finish.

It is exciting to report how successful Avatar has become The film will undoubtedly surpass Titanic on the domestic box office in the coming weeks and will eventually cross the $2 billion mark as well. While some people will say the reason for its success is the added expense of a 3D movie ticket, the film has clearly shows it has legs. 3D or no 3D the film is dominating all box office records and will continue to do so for weeks to come.
