Some of us may remember a jaw dropping rendition of comic book writer Frank Miller’s Sin City back in 2005. It was a noir-esque story of corruption and anti-heroism the likes of which had never been captured before on screen. The heroes killed the bad guys and we enjoyed it. Some of our heroes even died, but they did so in the most selfless ways imaginable. They rescued little girls and women, prostitutes and criminals all while saving the day for the little guy, but I digress. You may also remember that there was supposed to be a sequel. Jump ahead seven years and it looks like we may see it after all. The Playlist has scored the teaser poster image for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For which delivers absolutely nothing but a pair of smoking lips.

A Dame to Kill For is just one of the volumes from the Sin City world, but the film could easily use other stories from the series. Fan favorite Marv (Mickey Rourke) is in the story as well as other from the first film. Right now, the production is just starting out and no real details have emerged. It was speculated that we would get some existing stories with an original piece made specifically for the film, but right now that is not set in stone. At Fanboyz, we are completely excited at the idea of this sequel. It is a movie that we quote regularly. I just hope that it lives up to the first film.

Just when you thought that you would never watch America’s Got Talent, the producers of the series put an awesome four minute preview of Columbia Pictures The Amazing Spider-Man at the end of the show. Now, I know that I could have waited to watch it online, but seeing it on my big screen in my living room put me in the moment. The preview is amazing, for lack of a better word. I had been waiting a very long time for Spider-Man movie that captured not only web swinging actions, but Peter Parker’s, personality. Spider-Man is the greatest super hero of all time and this trailer gives the non-comic book reader a glimpse at what makes Spider-Man such a fantastic hero.

Watch the preview below.

What an spectacular piece to show the fans. Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker) is putting together a character that I can relate to and could solidify himself as one of the best actors to portray a comic book character to date. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of the first Spider-Man trilogy from Sony, but they never caught the character points that Garfield’s Peter Parker is portraying. The sarcasm that we see in the TV spot is dead on with the character from the comic book and it’s what I look forward to most when I read the stories. I am getting a strong hero vibe from the footage in the sense that it almost feels like Spider-Man could be real.

Christopher Nolan’s epic Batman trilogy is coming to and end this summer and the final trailer promises that it will end strong. The brilliance of the trailer is that it lets the story tell the action of the movie and not the other way around. I love that we don’t hear any of the explosions, gunshots or fighting in the clip. There is so much to be said about a trailer that delivers on the hype as much as this one has. I can honestly say that this two and a half minute clip is better than most movies that I have seen this year.

Eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, a new terrorist leader, Bane overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that brands him an enemy. IMDB

The fanboy in me is sad to see this series come to an end. However, I believe that Christopher Nolan will give us the first comic book movie trilogy that will end strong.

What do you think of the trailer? Post comments below.

We’re just about two weeks away from the start of the Summer 2012 movie season, and right out the gate comic book fans are going to get a feast with Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers. Superhero fans have been waiting their whole lives to get a good team-up flick, and it looks like Marvel is the first to cross the line with a star-studded cast and plenty of surprises in store. We’ve speculated about theories fans have been chatting about, but knowing Joss, he’ll have some big events that will put smiles on fans’ faces. I have written about some of the what, but equally important is the who. Since Comic Con 2011, we’ve known the lineup of main stars, but could The Avengers have some cameos foretelling the direction Marvel goes post-Avengers? Take a look at some of the Not-So-Usual-Suspects who could pop into the film.

Ant-Man

Heroes come both big and small; sometimes they are both big and small. Take Hank Pym: scientist, inventor, and a guy with a big heart. Known for his ability to change size at will, Hank was actually a member of the first team of Avengers, finding the chilly Steve Rodgers/Captain America frozen in ice in issue #4. Edgar Wright, a talented writer/director of films such as Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, has been working on the screenplay with writing partner Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) and have expressed Marvel’s interest in the project. Wright would produce and direct the film if the suits give the green light, but we’ll have to wait and see if anything comes to fruition. Whedonites have been hoping Nathan Fillion would play Pym, but at this point nothing official has been expressed about casting.

Doctor Strange

The Sorcerer Supreme isn’t something of a Mexican menu, he’s the defender of magic in our realm. Stephen Strange studies magic and becomes the arbiter of magic, drawing on the supernatural to fight forces threatening our world. His residence, the Sanctum Sanctorum has served as a place of respite for Avengers and other heroes throughout comics, and his associate, Wong, provided assistance to Strange and other heroes in need of help. At some point after Disney’s acquisition of Marvel, screenwriting team Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer worked on a treatment for a Doctor Strange film, the fate of which is unknown. However, it is common in Hollywood for people to rework screenplays and things might be being kept hush for now.

Fantastic Four

If you’re thinking, “Hey, they already made Fantastic Four into two movies” you are not mistaken. But Marvel was not happy with how they left things with the team on-screen, and plan on giving audiences a new introduction to the residents of the Baxter Building. If Avengers does want to tie into the universe of Fantastic Four, there are all sorts of ways. Making mention of their ill-fated trip to space (which gives them their powers), talk of a brilliant scientist named Richards, or something even more bold, revealing the existence of Victor von Doom.

Daredevil

Daredevil might not be as big of a hero as the others mentioned, but Matt Murdock is a formidable foe for criminals and evil. His stomping grounds being New York, one could easily work a Daredevil reference into Avengers, as the climactic battle occurs in the Big Apple. Out of all listed heroes, Daredevil’s inclusion is least likely, especially after news broke that director David Slade is taking a break from the project. If it was something that Marvel was looking for being a big summer hit, they have quite a problem on their hands. As much as I am skeptical of people in Hollywood and like to think misdirection is a fun trick they play on fans, this doesn’t feel like that sort of ploy.

So, why might one (or more) of these heroes have a little role in The Avengers? It’s simple, each of these franchises is currently being tooled around for a Marvel feature. The last two, Fantastic Four and Daredevil, already slugged baddies around on-screen, but both are getting the reboot treatment. Ant-Man is a fan-favorite for a lot of Avengers readers, as he has had a prominent role in the team at various times. Doctor Strange is a great character, but he’s never been alluded to in any of the Marvel films.

I think it would be great for one of these heroes to get a small mention or a brief introduction a la Hawkeye in Thor. What would be disappointing is if there is too much dedicated to the future of the Marvel movie universe in The Avengers. Fans should be able to sit back, enjoy the ride they’ve been patiently waiting for since Iron Man, and then get a big grin when they see a touch of foreshadowing. The great thing about Iron Man 3 (May 3, 2013), Captain America 2 (April 4, 2014) and Thor 2 (November 15, 2013) all hitting theaters before Summer 2014, the rumored “other feature” Marvel will have sharing the summer with the already-announced The Amazing Spider-Man 2, if they pass on throwing in a hero cameo in Avengers, they’ll have plenty of opportunity to do so.

Which hero (listed or not) would you like to see most? And remember, just because there’s a screenplay or work being done on a movie, that doesn’t mean it’ll see the light of day.

If you are anything like me, you’re beyond excited for Marvel‘s upcoming team flick The Avengers. Never before have the biggest names in comics been brought together on the big screen. Each of the individual films are great by themselves, but provide pieces of the puzzle director Joss Whedon is creating for fans of the superheroes. If you haven’t seen the most recent trailer for The Avengers, check it out below, then read up on some theories about the new film.

The Story

Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is up to no good. Following his fall from grace at the end of Thor, the adopted son of Odin was shown falling away from Asgard, and after the credits, appearing to be in control of Dr. Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård). The Cosmic Cube, or Tesseract, is in possession of S.H.I.E.L.D. following the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. From what we have gathered, Loki presents a threat so great, the earth’s mightiest heroes are assembled to combat it.

The Villains

Loki is shown to be in control of a mysterious army, causing all manner of havoc on our planet. Much has been said by comic book fans that the soldiers at his disposal are Skrulls, an alien race in Marvel comics known for their ability to assume the likeness and ability of others. It was rumored that a draft of the script that was taken from the set made mention of Maria Hill (Nick Fury‘s right-hand woman) being a Skrull. This theory is also supported by the appearance of a movie tie-in game that has Skrull-looking beings involved.

It’s plausible, but not the only theory. Another suggestion is that the army Loki is commanding are the Frost Giants, the large villainous creatures from Thor. Loki was the king’s son, taken by Odin and raised as his son. Perhaps the prince is hoping to ascend to the throne. Loki was attempting to destroy Jötunheim, their home, hoping to please his father. The master of lies Loki is, might trick them into believing it was Thor who attacked them, and destroying Earth’s inhabitants and his self-righteous brother would avenge their fallen.

Or perhaps it’s something else entirely…

Miscellaneous Thoughts

Iron Man’s Suit

One thing I noticed in the trailer is that Tony Stark wears two suits of armor. His early creations featured the round symbol on his chest, with the Arc reactor shinning through. However, at the end of Iron Man 2, Stark fixed his reactor problem and built a new suit, featuring an triangle on his chest. From the looks of the footage, the newer suit is worn earlier in the film, and the older one, towards the end.

Why does Tony go back to using an older suit? Perhaps he loses access to his wardrobe…

Stark Tower

Tony’s home-away-from-home is Stark Tower, eventually used as a home-base for The Avengers in the comics. Scenes from the new trailer suggest an attack on S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, so perhaps our heroes fall back to Tony’s digs. If one looks closely at the newly-released poster for the film, they’ll notice a glowing beam of light emitting from Stark Tower.

Iron Man is shown flying at the attackers, shooting at them as they appear to be emerging from a portal or vortex in the sky. Could Loki setup shop in Stark Tower and use that as a launching pad for an invasion?

Hero Vs. Hero

Loki is the god of mischief, a skilled liar and trickster. He manipulated those near him in Thor, and he will no doubt use his talents to get the upper hand against our heroes. A couple of shots show members of The Avengers fighting each other. Are there some jealousies abounding in their hearts? Or perhaps someone is pulling their strings.

Black Widow and Hawkeye share a close relationship. In fact, several shots feature the two of them together. Why would she be trying to take out her friend? I guess the best way to defeat a team is to divide them.

How Will It End?

I imagine the movie will finish up with each of the heroes going their own ways. If this film is a success, as Marvel believes it will be, another Avengers film will be in the works down the road. However, there’s a lot of stops along that highway. First, Iron Man 3 will be flying to theaters in May 3, 2013. We know Don Cheadle will be back as Lt. Rhodes/War Machine, and Sam Jackson is contracted to play Nick Fury several more times on film. Sources close to the production have said a large water tank will be used in the filming, and many have hoped Namor will be making an appearance. Purely speculation, but I believe Marvel’s upcoming films will be used to help launch more characters into the universe that might not necessarily warrant their own film.

Along in 2013 will be Thor 2. My guess is we won’t be seeing Thor winning over Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in The Avengers, so their relationship could be a focus of the second film. There is so much material from Thor’s universe that can be used in a film it’s tough to narrow down what we might see in the sequel.

Marvel have said they have another feature set to release in Summer 2014, and we know they are interested in both an Ant-Man movie and Doctor Strange. Each one could be a great addition to The Avengers lineup, so we’ll have to wait and see what move they make. It is still in early stages, but screenwriters are working on Captain America 2. My guess is Marvel will want each year to have two films they plan on tying in together for another Avengers movie.

These are just some ideas I have, and I would love to hear your thoughts or other ideas not mentioned here. Feel free to let us know what you’re thinking as we get closer to The Avengers, assembling in theaters May 4, 2012.

It just seems that Hugh Jackman can not catch a break with his next Wolverine film. After suffering the loss of Director Darren Aronofsky and script revisions it seems that even after a replacement director in James Mangold was found the project is still hitting snags. Deadline is reporting that Fox was looking to start filming Wolverine 2 this Fall, but the majority of the script takes place in Japan, which is hard to film in with its recent unfortunate weather issues. There is a chance that the filming may be moved to Canada or take place in both countries, however, it’s looking like the start date will happen sometime in the Spring of 2012. After the success of this Summers X-Men: First Class it was nice to see that Fox could deliver on an X-Film again. Although X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn’t sit well with the fans we all love Hugh Jackman and is ongoing commitment to the X-Men franchise as well as the name sake features. He seems to know that this is his bread and butter and acknowledges past mistakes about the subject matter. More than for myself, I hope that we can get at least one more good Wolverine appearance out of Jackman. I know he can do it.

Excited for another Wolverine movie? Post comments below.

Shooting a giant action scene for The Avengers, director Joss Whedon is using Cleveland as a stand-in for New York City. If you haven’t been paying attention to the films, The Avengers are a dream team of superheros, handpicked by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to take on a threat to the world. The roster includes Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). We know, after the events of Thor, that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) will get possession of a powerful artifact (the Cosmic Cube introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger) and will seek to punish his brother Thor along with humanity with it. A couple of interesting pieces of media have leaked from the set, including Captain America taking on some baddies in a pretty large scale fight. We ran a great shot of Chris Evans rocking out his 21st century outfit, but some more pictures and video made their way online. Take a look at some photos and video from the set of The Avengers, and feel free to let us know if you have any theories about the film. The Avengers assembles into theaters May 4, 2012.

So, the first Ghost Rider movie was awful. Bad acting, horrible script/story, and the graphics were pretty terrible. However, undaunted by horrible reviews and an unhappy base, Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor wanted to take a crack at it, but only if they did the comic justice. As you may remember, the first look at the film at Comic Con 2011 really impressed us, and now we get the first official trailer, compiled of the footage screened at the convention. The movie is going to really have to impress after the bad taste the first film left in fans’ mouths, but it looks like they’re heading in the right direction. Take a look at the trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of the Vengeance below, and let us know what you think before it hits theaters February 17, 2012.

Marvel has done something very interesting with The Avengers franchise by having all of these other set up films to prequel the main title. It’s a bold move and with the success of this years Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger it looks like it may pay off. MTV has posted this great photo of Chris Evans in a more modern rendition of the star spangled man with a plans costume. I like the new take on the outfit, but honestly I think that I prefer the costume from The First Avenger. It looked very “real” to me and like something that could have been made in that time. However, this one is sleek and very stream lined, plus it does manage to carry some of the charm from the first one. I do like that it looks more “comic bookie” with the gloves and boots. I just hope that it looks good in the fights.

What do you think of Captain America’s new look? Post comments below.

Director Steven Soderbergh puts together an all star cast for Contagion which centers around a team of Doctors that struggle to contain a world wide disease epidemic. Contagion stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and many more in the thriller that reminds me of 1995′s Outbreak. Warner Bros. has just released these six character posters that are very powerful. They really make me want to wash my hands. The trailer is really quite a captivating set up for the film and I don’t feel like it gives too much away. Damon and Winslet look like they will be bringing some of that Oscar power to the feature while the rest of the cast puts together a great ensemble to match. The only odd thing that I have found about the film is that it will be released in IMAX. It doesn’t really feel like a movie that I would watch on the IMAX screen, but that is just what Warner Bros. does.
