With Marvel Studios making all of their comic book icons into films after a while, the pool starts to run a little low with choices. We’ve had amazing movies made for Iron Man and the X-Men and some spectacular failures with projects like Elektra. However, there are still some more, obscure, characters that can be made into viable film adaptations. The Old Spice man himself, Isaiah Mustafa has be saying online for months that he would love to play Marvel’s Hero for Hire Luke Cage. Believing that he is the perfect choice for the part, Mustafa has released what looks to be a self produced proof of concept style trailer to showcase his confidence in the role. Being only 41 seconds long it does a good job of teasing the audience with a glimpse at Cages’ origin and lets this comic book fan know that this is something that could be done. Sweet Christmas! This is a teaser worth seeing.

Marvel is doing some X-Men inspired variants this month and getting ready for the release of X-Men: First Class. Even though we will not get to see all of our favorite team members in the film, we are getting to see them in these “through the years” style variant covers. Friends of mine know exactly why I chose this cover; My undying love for all things Jean Grey. This is my favorite cover this week. Seeing all of these different incarnations of my favorite X-Man is great. Amazing job done by Paul Renaud.

Giuseppe Camuncoli brings his serious skills to our COW column with this great cover for Daken Dark Wolverine #9. It was only a matter of time before Wolverine’s son and clone would meet claw to claw and the outcome did not disappoint. Camuncoli draws a very aggressive portrait for the reader with this piece and I absolutely love seeing Daken’s shadow contrasting X-23′s crouching attack pose. Seeing this from outside of a jail cell would let anyone know that they were in for a fight. Claws, claws and more claws makes this issue a must have for fans of the Wolverine blood line.

This is an interesting choice for our COW selection because I am not a fan of artist Daniel Acuna. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true. It’s not that I think that he is bad, I’m just not a fan of his style. That said, I really enjoyed this cover for FF #2 Acuna he has put out. Dr. Doom is a character that is done the same way a lot, however, Acuna has a simple design that really catches the eye. I love the classic Doom pose against the fiery, brown background. It shows you how bad Doom can be as he is engulfed in flames like a phoenix.

Stefano Caselli brings it hard with this cover for Amazing Spider-Man #658. I think that this new costume of Spider-Man’s could be really tough as a black and white ensemble, but Caselli has made it dynamic. The shadowing paired with that crazy design in the background really work. I’m interested in how future covers can pan out with this costume because the you can lose it in different lights. There will be times when the colors work in night time covers and may not in others. It’s a little role reversal from the classic black suit, so artists will have to be creative. This is Spidey’s new costume for FF,or the new Fantastic Four, so we will get to see plenty of covers showcasing it.

What do you think of Spidey’s new costume? How do you like the cover? Post below.

Stuart Immonen delivers us an updated look at a classic grouping of Marvel Comics big three. Iron Man, Thor and Steve Rogers are done well here, yet very simply. Even with Steve Rogers not in his Captain America uniform you know that you’re in for a fight. This really does look like a very plain cover. What really sold me was the grouping of heroes in the background. I love how they look in that starry universe. It’s very compelling. The way Ms. Marvel looks is intimidating. She looks like she could take on the whole page of heroes.

The three covers are all plays on 60′s style magazines. Charles Xavier is on a Life style cover, Erik Lensher on an Esquire like cover and Emma Frost on a Vogue looking cover. Each one is brilliant and a great throw back to the 60′s. I am really enjoying how the film is being marketed. It feels like Fox really wants us to be pulled into the past with this project. It makes me wonder how “Out” the mutants are going to be in the film or if they are just pushing the era for nay-sayers from the last X-Men film.

Skottie Young has been doing great covers for Marvel for the last few years. Most notably for Marvel’s Oz series. But every now and again he does something with a cover that is playful and fun. This piece really hearkens back to my youth, however, not that it reminds me of Deadpool, but of The Tick. In the 90′s The Tick had an animated series that featured a character named Omnipotus, whom resembles Galactus. Omnipotus eats planets for sustenance much like Galactus drains them of the energy to live. But instead of using grand cosmic power like Galactus, Omipotus just takes bites out of the planets. It was a great parody for comic book lovers and Young must have been a fan of the same episode. Seeing this cover for Deadpool Team-Up is definitely what he was going for and I have to say that it gives me a smile. Normally this cover would be in our What The? section for Cover of the Week, but nostalgia puts it in the number one spot.
