Along with action figure exclusive, San Diego Comic- Con also does some comic books as well. The offerings range from each publisher and most times the covers are pretty good. The fact that we are in San Diego has caused me to choose the SDCC Steve Rogers: Super Soldier #1 sketch variant. It shows a colorless version of the first issue that came out in stores on July 8, 2010. It’s a simple cover, but I have always enjoyed a good sketch cover. Carlos Pacheco is the cover artist for this issue, but Dale Eaglesham does the interior art. I would like to see Eaglesham get a SDCC cover at some point because he is a pro and deserves a Comic- Con variant.

The man with a funny nickname, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, brings us another amazing Batgirl cover. The guy just knows how to draw her. It’s an interesting thing to be able draw a character with a bloody lip and not feel bad for that person. Stephanie Brown is the new Batgirl and I think that she is doing a fine job. I’d like to be able to put some more new artists in our COW column, but it seems like David Finch and Lau are just putting up the prime covers.

X-Men + Vampires = An awesome cover. A new name in our COW section joins the ranks of of great cover artists, Paco Medina. He has been bouncing around in some other X-titles, but had narrowly missed the chance to be a COW artist. Now, I know that it is no claim to fame for Medina, but we take our COW artists very seriously. What can I say? I love a good team pose and a pose of my favorite team will get you in our column. I really like how they are in a castle and it looks like the “X-Vampires” are protecting their leader.

Again, David Finch pops up in our COW column. I’m trying not pick Finch covers, but when they look this good it’s hard not to. The thing about this cover, though, is that this does not reflect Finch’s best work. I think that he is a master of the group or team photo. However, the reason that this is our Cover of the Week is just because it’s cool to see Lex Luthor in Orange Lantern armor. It’s actually a very simple looking cover, but I think it looks great.

Design 2.o paints a very interesting picture for this Avengers #2 variant cover. I’m not sure if I am a big fan of this style of art, but you cannot argue that it isn’t fresh. I am all for thinking out of the box and to see art like this lets me know that artists are changing and putting the bar higher. Sure, it has no relevance to the story inside, but it’s a great trip to look at. The bunnies freak me out a bit though.

Claudio Castellini delivers a great cover for THE JOKERS ASYLUM: HARLEY QUINN. I am a through and through Harley fan, so when she gets a solo cover I am pretty happy. It’s kind of weird, but I like the view of looking up at her like she just took me out. I know, I have problems. The shadow of Batman creeping up behind her is a cool visual as well. Though, I feel he may be too late.

This is, possibly, one of the best pieces of fan art that I have ever seen. My favorite animated show is FUTURAMA and my favorite comic book team is the X-MEN. This is totally a match made in heaven for me. This image was created and posted by gottabecarl at DeviantArt. I would totally purchase this piece for my collection. How many characters can you name both X-Men and Futurama related? Which of the characters is your favorite?

The Robot Devil as Mr. Sinister,  Nixon as the Juggernaut and Scruffy as Gambit have me laughing the most. You know that I am a Phoenix fan so Lela has stolen the show for me.

I know that you guys must be getting tired of my love for David Finch, but his covers are killing it for SECOND COMING. I don’t really know what other praise to give Finch as he has been featured in our COW column several times. I will say that I am not a fan of the way that he has drawn X-23. She looks far younger than we normally see her. That’s a small critique. All in all this is a great cover.

This week we have a very cool cover for fans of Batman Beyond the animated series. Stanley “Artgerm”  Lau draws this beautiful cover that is a nod to the series episode ” THE CALL” from the last season of the show. Fans were very happy to see the Superman of the future and looked forward to more. The story for the issue is pretty good, but for me the cover sold it. I hope that it opens the door for more team ups for the future Worlds Finest.
