The collaboration of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio is a success, yet again. Their new film, Shutter Island, opened to $41 million this weekend which is a record breaking opening for the Oscar winning director. Scorsese scored his biggest opening ever with Shutter Island, and this movie goes to show how successful the Scorsese DiCaprio team really is. For those who may not remember, Shutter Island was originally scheduled for release last October, but was pushed back until February of this year to allow more time and money for marketing. Clearly that worked out.
Love was in the air this weekend at movie theaters across the country as the ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day was a smash hit grossing $66.8 million over the holiday weekend. Clearly those behind Valentine’s Day knew they had a very easy movie to market as Sunday was…..gasp! you guessed it, Valentine’s Day. It didn’t hurt the movie either that Monday was President’s Day, so the majority of movie goers were not at work or school. $66.8 million easily broke the President’s Day weekend record, previously held by 2007’s Ghost Rider ($52 million.) Also opening this weekend was The Wolfman and Percy Jackson which fared well with $36.4 million and $38.7 million respectively. Continue reading for a full break down of the weekend box office.
For seven weeks Avatar was the top dog at the box office. That was until Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried dropped a romance called Dear John into theaters and teen girls everywhere went to see it. For the last two months Avatar has had little competition at box office and has been the number one movie since it was released on December 18th. This weekend I thought Avatar would make it eight weeks without a struggle ( I actually lost a bet on this); however I apparently underestimate the power of a Nicolas Spark’s novel and a Channing Tatum fan base. Dear John managed to pull in a whopping $30.4 million which is the highest Super Bowl weekend gross of all time. Avatar may have came in second place but it did so at a respectable $22.8 million. Keep reading for a full breakdown of the weekend box office.
If your sick of hearing about how Avatar is breaking all these box office records, then this will probably be one of the last articles we run on the matter. That’s because Avatar has now broken the last big record it had yet to accomplish: highest grossing movie of all time. On Tuesday, Avatar topped Titanic as the highest grossing film ever with over $600 million in domestic box office tickets. If James Cameron was “King of the World” after Titanic’s record-breaking run, then I am not sure what self-inflicted title he will give himself this time around. The man is the mastermind behind the two highest grossing films of all time, so the recognition is warranted. So, how far will Titanic go? Keep reading for our take on it.
Continuing its reign of terror on the box office, Avatar has now made it seven weeks at number one. Grossing $31 million this past weekend, Avatar only dropped 10% from the previous weekend, and is now less than $7 million away from topping Titanic as the highest grossing film of all time. Even with competition from Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness and the romantic comedy When in Rome, Avatar could once again, not be touched. With a domestic gross of $594 million and a worldwide sum of $2 billion Avatar shows no signs of slowing down.
Following the success of James Cameron’s Avatar has become one of the most interesting stories in box office history. Most importantly because it will soon become the highest grossing film in history as it takes aim at Cameron’s other big film, Titanic. This weekend Avatar made it six straight weekends at number one and on Saturday surpassed The Dark Knight to become the second highest grossing movie of all time. And today we are able to report that Avatar has now topped Titanic internationally to become the highest grossing film worldwide. Oh man is the box office on fire! James Cameron’s Avatar is showing no signs of slowing down as it has now crossed $500 million at the domestic box office. Avatar now stands only $28 million away from passing The Dark Knight (#2 all time) and less than $100 million from that other James Cameron movie (Titanic at #1.) Can it do it? Absolutely. For the fifth straight weekend Avatar has held the number one spot and with less than appealing movies coming out next week it should go another week at the top spot. Even with competition from Denzel Washington in The Book of Eli, Avatar could not be dethroned from it’s reign. Eli opened very strong with $38 million which is the fourth highest January opening ever. For a full breakdown on the weekend box office continue reading.
The 2009 box office ended on a high note as James Cameron’s Avatar crossed one billion dollars in worldwide box office sales. This means that Cameron is now the only director to have two movies cross one billion dollars with Avatar now joining the list that contains Cameron’s last film, 1997’s Titanic. While the worldwide gross of Avatar is beyond impressive, it continue to bank more and more money domestically. After three weeks of release Avatar has earned an astonishing $352 million and shows no signs of slowing down. Record breaking is a phrase that has become synonymous with Avatar and we will be hearing much more from this epic film in the coming weeks. For those who haven’t been following the box office success of this movie continue reading for a full breakdown of what Avatar has achieved in a very short amount of time.
It took an indigenous planet, a detective, and a trio of musical chipmunks to make Hollywood have a very merry Christmas. This holiday weekend witnessed numerous box office records being broken. Instead of coal under the tree, studio executives will be seeing dollar signs. The big winner of the weekend was once again James Cameron’s Avatar which took the top spot for a second weekend with an astonishing $75 million. For the record, that is less than a 2% drop from it’s opening weekend last week (where it banked $77 million.) Also, bringing in huge numbers were Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and the animated kids movie Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Sherlock drummed up $62.3 million opening weekend and Alvin and company pulled in $48.8 million. Multiple records were broken this weekend. To see what those are and for a full weekend break down of the box office continue reading.
As expected, The Twilight Saga: New Moon was number one at the box office this weekend with a smashing debut of $140 million. Opening on Friday the sequel to 2008’s Twilight broke the single day record previously held by The Dark Knight. Including its record breaking midnight debut New Moon earned $72.7 million on Friday besting the previous record of $67 million held by The Dark Knight. Challenging The Dark Knight for top three day opening, New Moon failed to defeat the superhero film from 2008 which still holds the record with $158 million. It also was unable to surpass Spider-Man 3’s opening weekend of $151 million set in 2007. However, sitting at the number three spot with $140 million isn’t too bad. The New Moon madness is upon us. If you are a teenage girl obsessed with the Twilight Saga then you may already be camping out to see the first midnight show outside your local theater. If that is the case then you are responsible for this headline which states that The Twilight Saga: New Moon has now become the highest advanced ticket-seller in the history of Fandango. Now, you may wonder why we should even care. But after you take a look at what movies it has topped than you may be rather impressed (or not depending on what you find impressive.) New Moon, the sequel to 2007’s Twilight has beat out some characters from a galaxy far, far away, a teenage wizard, and a guy who fights crime dressed as a bat. The holiday movie season continues its hot streak with the disaster film 2012 destroying the weekend box office with a $65 million opening. Director Roland Emmerich is the king of destruction on screen having brought audiences Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. Surpassing expectations, 2012 easily took the number one spot after a $23 million opening day, which led to $65 million by the end of weekend. Last week A Christmas Carol started the holiday movie season with $31 million, and next week will continue with big box office numbers when The Twilight Saga: New Moon hits theaters everywhere.
The low budget horror flick Paranormal Activity will reach the $100 million mark at box office this week. The film was made for only $11,000 and has now become the most profitable film in years. What originally began as a release of a few midnight shows expanded into just college markets and then exploded nationwide. The movie had a brilliant marketing campaign that consisted of a website called ParanormalMovie.com where movie buffs could demand the film come to their hometown. If any film in the past few years has benefited from word of mouth this has to be it.
The first big holiday film of the season arrived this weekend to the tune of $30 million. The Jim Carrey Robert Zemeckis collaboration about the classic Charles Dicken’s tale took top honors at the weekend box office. The 3D animated movie made $30 million Friday – Sunday which was a solid debut, however it was below industry expectations. With the added cost of IMAX tickets and digital 3D features, this film had an advantage to rake in more cash. The one bright spot for this film is that it’s early November release will mean a long run through the holiday season. The IMAX version will be in theaters through the 17th of December when Avatar takes over on the 18th. For a full breakdown of the November 6th-8th box office read on!
With no other new competition at the box office this weekend, the Michael Jackson concert documentary This Is It rose to the number one spot with $21.3 million from Friday to Sunday. The film opened the Wednesday before and it had a five day total gross of $32.5 million which was less than most industry expectations. The film followed the late pop singer as he prepared for his London concert series which unfortunately never hit the stage for audiences. Playing on over 3,000 screens, This Is It is scheduled to have a two week limited run, so the numbers should remain strong for the movie. The October box office is heating up. Thanks to two new hot releases and a horror movie that is burning up the charts the Hollywood box office is seeing dollar signs. The number one movie this weekend belonged to director Spike Jonze’s adaptation of the children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. Pulling in $32.6 million, Wild Things also received a strong 68% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Wild Things easily won the weekend box office crown. Surprisingly, the number two spot went to the Jaimee Fox, Gerard Butler action drama flick Law Abiding Citizen. Popular among movie goers, Citizen grossed $21 million Friday-Sunday. Continue reading for a full recap of the weekend box office.
The box office was full of laughter this weekend as the ensemble comedy Couples Retreat stormed the top spot with $34 million. Led by Vince Vaughn Couples Retreat easily won the weekend. Although the comedy had no competition this weekend holdovers like Zombieland and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs held on strong. Even though Couples Retreat was the number one film of the weekend, the big news is that the horror flick Paranormal Activity took the number four spot with $7.9 million. This is incredible seeing as this movie is only playing on 160 screens. For comparison, Couples Retreat played on 3,000 screens. Paranormal Activity should continue on the high road as it expands to even more screen this coming weekend. Continue reading for a full breakdown of the weekend box office.
The box office rose from the dead this weekend with a killer opening by Zombieland. The Sony Pictures film which stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg received a positive response from audiences and critics alike. Zombieland has a solid 89% fresh rating via Rotten Tomatoes and with little competition at movie theaters the film easily took the top spot. Even with an R rating the horror/ comedy blend brought in a big audience making it a big opening for the month of October. The film held off competition from newcomers like the Toy Story 3D double feature, The Invention of Lying, and Whip It. Continue reading for a full weekend recap of the weekend box office.
Even with three new releases this weekend Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs held off the competition for a consecutive week in the number one spot. The animated flick stopped newcomers like Surrogates, Fame, and Pandorum from even getting a chance to take that top spot. Cloudy held on strong, only dropping 18.8% with a total of $24.6 million. After two weeks of release this film has earned an impressive $60 million. Far behind Meatballs were the three other new releases which couldn’t even hold a threat to this animated movie. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs soared to the top spot of the box office this weekend bringing in $30.3 million making ‘Meatballs’ the third best September opening ever. This is good news to report after several weeks of poor box office results. With several newcomers challenging each other for box office gold, the animated kids flick easily topped it’s contenders for a number one spot. It certainly helped to have numerous screens showing the movie in 3D which means higher priced tickets. How did the rest of the weekend play out for new films like Jennifer’s Body, The Informant, and Love Happens? Continue reading for a full weekend box office break down.
