Five for Writing: Who Should Play Superman?

There’s been a ton of Superman news since Comic-Con 2010. First, the TV show Smallville will be entering its final season this fall. Considering the outstanding second half the show had last season, a lot of fans are gearing up for some big surprises and action-packed episodes as the show looks to go out with a bang. Second, related to the show, it has been confirmed that Clark will wear the Superman costume during the final season. Could this be a hint that Warner Bros. are seriously looking to transition the cast and characters from Smallville to the big screen? The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has confirmed some level of involvement with an upcoming Superman project, which his brother Jonathan Nolan is currently working on. A lot of speculation is swirling around the reboot, so I thought it’d be best to throw some more speculation on the fire. Below is a list of some actors who may or may not make for a good Man of Steel.
Brandon Routh/Tom Welling
I’m putting these two guys together because they are the current Super-guys. Brandon Routh last portrayed Kal-El in film (2006′s Superman Returns) and Tom Welling is the current Clark Kent on CW’s Smallville. A lot of people were let down by Superman Returns, but rarely do you hear anything negative about Routh’s performance. Sure, the movie had its story/lack of action problems, but Routh did a fantastic job with what he had. Plus, he was one of the best ex’s in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World so a lot of people are talking about him right now. Welling has maintained a steady pace as Clark Kent of Smallville for the past 10 years. The Last Son of Krypton is quite the epic character to play on a TV show, especially one that’s lasted a decade. Routh seems like a safe pick, because he’s already done a film and has positive buzz playing Superman, but Welling is what many see as the “future” of the character. Smallville‘s Clark is emotionally vulnerable and has had his bouts with the dark side, not unfamiliar territory for the Nolan brothers. If Warner Bros. isn’t looking for a big change from the way they’ve set up Superman on film, these guys would be pretty good picks.
Matthew Bomer
A lot of movie fans recognize the name’s attachment to the role. Bomer, who’s currently on the hit USA Network show White Collar, was actually Bret Ratner’s choice for Superman before he left the Superman Returns project and Bryan Singer came aboard. Bomer brings with him the recognizable face from White Collar as well as small roles on film, including Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Flightplan. He’s got a great look to him, a face that would look good hidden behind glasses at the Daily Planet, as well as confidence protecting Metropolis from threats alien and domestic.
Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm is a drastically different perspective on the character of Superman. First, he’s a good deal older in appearance from the other picks, and that may actually be a good thing. Second, his acting chops are strongly dramatic, seeing worldwide success with AMC’s Mad Men television show. Hamm’s appearance is reminiscent of George Reeves, the 1950s television actor who played the titular Superman on Adventures of Superman. His strong facial features and big chested form would be perfect if the Nolans wanted to roll back the story to a more classic Metropolis, with the men wearing fedoras and a Lois Lane in her late 30s.
Milo Ventimiglia

Milo isn’t a household name, but his portrayal of Superman would no doubt be a much stronger connection between the character and the audience. Milo is used to saving people, having starred in the now canceled NBC show Heroes. Sure, he’s not as big or tall as the other actors, and traditionally Superman is a pretty encompassing presence, but Milo has an empathetic connection in his acting talent. Superman is always thought to be the big tough hero, but like Smallville has shown, he is just human with his emotions as he is strong being from Krypton.
Zac Efron
Strange enough, there aren’t any pictures of Zac Efron on the Internet
Yep, I went there. First, I’m not saying Zac Efron would make a great Superman. But you have to admit, he’s a pretty good actor. A lot of people have a hard time looking past his High School Musical days, but he did a good job in both 17 Again and Charlie St. Cloud. Now if Warner Bros. decides to take Clark back a few years, I could see them going with a guy like Efron. Some may say if the Nolans or Warner Bros. decide to take Superman on a younger route, they should stick with Tom Welling. However, there were a lot of choices and decisions made about Clark on Smallville that could hurt his transition from TV to film, most notably, the fact that Clark would literally look the exact same way he does in or out of the costume. Anyone who lived in Smallville or worked at the Daily Planet would catch on to his appearance. If they want to do an in-between of Smallville and living in Metropolis, casting a young actor like Zac Efron may work.
Who do you think would be the best choice out of these actors to play Superman? Let us know what your opinion is below.

I'm not sure. Jon Hamm is too old and it's hard to see Zac Efron older than a high schooler. We already had a high school Superman and… well we wouldn't agree on what I thought of that show. Maybe it got better in the last season but everything else I saw… I think the Smallville Clark needs to go. Maybe it's just how Superman should be? Lacking common sense and actual events happening? Forgetting what happened up to last week's cliff hanger and never finishing that part of the story? Well I'm not here to bash Smallville… directly, but it would be kind of cool seeing a TV show franchise turn into a movie franchise with the same actor… but then they'd have to bring it all the other characters from the show. I vote no on Tom Welling. Either of the other guys would be fine by me, I'm sure they would do a fine job.
Now I don't think they'll make Superman relatable at all.
Superman just might not be my thing.
Brandon Routh, definitely.
He did a great job in Superman Returns. I also really liked the actor who played Lex Luthor, his name escapes me right now but I thought he stole the show.
I think if they were to do a classic Superman story then Jon Hamm would be great for that role. However I don't see that being the commercially viable way to go with the story. Hamm would have been a good Superman 10 years ago, but now he is just too old for the role.
I say ditch Routh and Welling and go another direction. Routh filled the shoes so to speak in Superman Returns but that has to be one of the most forgettable movies of the last few years. @Joshua – you are correct, Kevin Spacey was great as Lex Luthor, but that was about it for that lackluster film.
Not enough people follow Smallville for anyone to even care if Tom Welling went to the big screen. For most moviegoers he will just be another Superman, not the guy who played Superman on television.
And Jordan, good article except for the bit on Zac Efron being a pretty good actor. We have yet to see this, and 17 again and Charlie St. Cloud were not the vehicles to display any type of talent besides a pretty face and great hair. Besides that Efron is just too young and boyish looking to be taken seriously as The Man of Steel.
I say go with a newbie. That or Nic Cage. I like him.
Just kidding…
Yea, Zac was fun in 17 Again but that's just going back to me (and probably other people) not being able to see him play a character older than 17…again…
No one can stop the man of steel and no one can escape the Cage! There's your tag line, make it happen!
I think that I should play Superman. A Mexican with a receding hair line is exactly the shot in the arm that this franchise needs. Also, I'm witty and enjoy long walks on the beach and the occasional belly rub. See, the resume rights itself… or the dating profile.
I'm a Welling fan through and through. Cut his hair and make him look his actual age, 33, and I think that we can have a pretty convincing Superman.
roman you would make a perfect superman,
I think the best would have to be jon hamm. Hes rather good lookin and he has that great superman chin.
