Comic-Con: Green Lantern’s Light at Waner Brothers Panel

Hall H was ablaze today with more comic book rich film panels. First on the docket was the highly anticipated Warner Brosthers panel. Headlining this was DC Comics movie adaptation of the Green Lantern. With Entertainment Weekly’s debut of Ryan Reynolds, playing Hal Jordan, in the GL costume last week, I was a little skeptical. I didn’t like the photos too much and was unsure of how the movie was going to be. Luckily for me, and a room of other San Diego Comic- Con attendees, we got to view a clip of the film that put some of my fears to rest. However, we did not see Reynolds in costume in the clip, but we did get to see him wield the power ring. Director Martin Campbell did say that the costume was still a work in progress and that it is meant to be more like a second skin on the ring bearer. He also added that they have decided not to have the white gloves on the suit. I loved what we were shown at the panel. Hearing Hal Jordan say the Green Lantern Corps oath over the clip made it that much more amazing.

For the fans wondering about what we can expect from Reynolds portrayal of Hal Jordan, I think that he summed it up in this quote. “He’s a guy who can throw a punch, tell a joke and kiss a girl”. I can not think of a more simple, yet accurate way to describe our leading ring slinger. As far as other GL’s that we will see in the movie, we were told that we would see Kilowog, Tomar Re, Salaak, Boodika, Bzzd, Green Man and Stel to name a few. Also, that it would not be out of the ordinary to see Alan Scott in the franchise at a later date. Sinestro will also be in the film as a member of the corps and is played by Mark Strong. We were informed that we will get to see the planet Oa, which is essentially the Green Lantern home world.

There were a few insights to later films for a franchise as Reynolds said that we will see Parallax in this movie. After he said this he quickly looked at Campbell for approval because he wasn’t sure if he could say that.  Also, Blake Lively, who portrays love interest Carol Ferris, alluded to the fact that she likes her character because she gets to play a strong woman as well as the love interest and later gets to be a villain. This is a reference to Ferris’s character becoming a Star Sapphire in the comic books who is a major villain for Hal Jordan. She said this quickly and it was never revisited. As a fan, I know that both of these things are too big to fit into the same movie, so a sequel may already be further into the pipeline that we are lead to believe.
