Teaser for J.J. Abrams/Spielberg Film SUPER 8

Shrouded in secrecy and speculation, the trailer for SUPER 8 has finally hit the web.  The only details we know about the movie is that it takes place in 1979, deals with an alien escaping US custody between Area-51 and Ohio, where the cargo is being delivered. It is being directed by J.J. Abrams, who won box office and critical success with STAR TREK last year. Joining him is legendary director Steven Spielberg, who will be producing the project for Paramount through his studio Amblin Entertainment. The trailer is a base teaser, but it’s pretty cool to see the massive train wreck anyway, so check it out. Read more about the movie and see the teaser below.

First, it’s hard to say how exactly this film is going to play out, meaning I wonder if it’ll be shot like a regular feature film, or similar to how they filmed CLOVERFIELD, in the first person POV. I don’t want to make that assumption simply because Abrams was involved in both projects, but the name may be a clue. Super 8mm film was the  commonplace home film format back in the 1970s. Therefore, I wonder if the movie will be “shot” on 8mm film to add to authenticity of the story. It’d be a cop-out to shoot a movie taking place in 1979 with digital cameras but pretend it’s being shot on an old format. They can shoot it with current technology and digitally render it as aged or, what I’d like to see, shot on native 8mm film itself. We will have to wait for more details on SUPER 8 as they roll in, and stay tuned for bigger news as we approach the release date Summer 2011. Leave your thoughts below.
