Can it be? Am I dreaming? Reports are circulating on the web that Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon is in final talks to direct the upcoming AVENGERS film. According to a post on April Fools Day IESB posted that Whedon was on a short list of directors that were up for consideration to direct the hero heavy film. Most sites do April Fools posts on that day so many people disregarded this news as a joke. Now, it looks like a deal is being hammered out.

Deadline is reporting that Joss Whedon is working out the details with Marvel Studios to direct the film. Whedon may not have the best resume in the eyes of some people to helm such a project, but fan boys all over the world are letting out a collective sigh of relief. Some might say that he has too many failed TV shows, i.e.  FIREFLY and DOLLHOUSE. And his big screen film SERENITY wasn’t well received by critics, but  this is something that needs to happen more often when it comes to comic book properties. Lets get a man or woman behind the lens that understands the genera. Once upon a time, Whedon was set to direct a Wonder Woman film, but creative differences between the writer/ director prevented that marriage from happening. Whedon has great history with Marvel Comics and has done some amazing work there. His run on ASTONISHING X-MEN was the best 25 issues of an X-Men title in 20 years as far as I’m concerned. Not to mention the collected twelve seasons of Buffy and Angel that he was apart of changed the way we looked at pop-horror. I definitely believe that he has the ability to write and direct a cast of this volume, which can be hard for some. Right now Zak Penn (X2, THE INCREDIBLE HULK) is set to write the screen play, but I have a feeling that if Whedon gets on board he will have something to say about that.

What do you think? Is this a good choice for the possible AVENGERS franchise? Post comments below.
