Christopher Nolan to Mentor New ‘Superman’ Films
Some stirring news has popped up on the web today for Superman fans. In a report from Deadline Hollywood it would seem that DC Comics Man of Steel will be getting some much needed guidance from The Dark Knight guru Christopher Nolan. Now, before you get too excited Nolan is not set to direct the reboot of the franchise at this time, but lend some experience to the project. I would imagine him playing the producer role on the picture rather than behind the lens. Can DC’s flagship hero be resurrected into another film franchise?

After the disastrous reception of Superman Returns among the fans and general movie goers, it seemed that our favorite Kryptonian might never get the Hollywood treatment that he deserved. Some fans believe that Superman is just too wholesome an idea to turn into a character that people can relate to. Although, that’s one of the great things about such a being like Superman. He is that great a person that instills hope into people. Maybe we can never be like him, but if we try it makes us all better. I think these are some of the points that they need to get across in the next feature, Superman’s infinite capacity for compassion and ability to inspire hope. In Returns the character felt very cold to me and had no personality. According to an inside source “We learned a lot from the last movie, and we want to get it right this time. We know what we don’t want to do, but we don’t know what we want to do”. This is a bit frustrating for a long time fan of the comics because it still sounds like they are not to sure about one of the most popular characters in the world. It’s like, the story works on paper why can’t you make it into a film?
At this point the project is in the very early stages of development. Plus, Nolan has reportedly come up with an idea for a third Batman picture. Any details on that right now would be far too early to comment on. I hope that Nolan understands that a darker version of Superman is not something that we need. Batman is dark and Superman is light. These two things are basic in the DC Universe. If he gets that, with any luck, Nolan and his crew can bring us the Superman franchise that we have been waiting for.
What do you think of Christopher Nolan on this project?
