Box Office: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Dominates for Second Weekend

Even with three new releases this weekend Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs held off the competition for a consecutive week in the number one spot. The animated flick stopped newcomers like Surrogates, Fame, and Pandorum from even gettingĀ  a chance to take that top spot. Cloudy held on strong, only dropping 18.8% with a total of $24.6 million. After two weeks of release this film has earned an impressive $60 million. Far behind Meatballs were the three other new releases which couldn’t even hold a threat to this animated movie. Bruce Willis’ sci-fi action film Surrogates took the number two spot with $15 million. Even with an interesting concept, a huge star, and a fanboy following from the comic book, Surrogates failed to reach box office glory. Even the reviews for the film were weak with only a 35% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The number three spot went to the remake of Fame. The song and dance flick drummed up $10 million in box office sales. Fame suffered an even lower Rotten Tomatoes rating than Surrogates with only 23% fresh.

Pandorum, the sci-fi movie starring Dennis Quaid really failed to garner any attention as it debuted at number six with only $4.4 million.

The fourth and fifth spot went to The Informant and Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All by Myself respectively. Matt Damon’s comedy took in another $6.9 million and Tyler Perry added $4.75 million to its total gross. After two weeks The Informant has made $20.9 million and ICDBABMS is at $44.5 million.

If it wasn’t for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs the September box office would really be DOA. Check out our box office report next week when we report on the rerelease of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D!
