Box Office: Tyler Perry Does it Again with ‘I Can Do Bad All By Myself’
Another slow weekend at the box office gives the new Tyler Perry move I Can do Bad All By Myself an easy victory. Perry’s new film which he wrote and directed for the big screen took to the top of the weekend box office pulling in an estimated $24 million. This was good enough for a first place finish as its closest competitor was $14 million behind. The animated movie 9 from director Shane Acker opened on Wednesday (9/9) and just from Friday – Sunday grossed $10 million. Including Wednesday and Thursday, 9 has grossed $15.2 million in its first five days. The other two new wide releases didn’t fare as well. Tyler Perry has become a successful writer, director, and producer in Hollywood. His last movie Madea Goes to Jail opened earlier this year to $40 million. While his latest feature didn’t have that big of a weekend, it still was another big hit for Perry. With little competition I Can Do Bad All By Myself cashed in on box office gold to the tune of $24 million.
The other three new wide releases this weekend were the following:
Shane Acker’s 9 took the number two spot with $10.8 million from Friday- Sunday.
The horror flick Sorority Row bombed with $5.2 million and a number six finish. This R rated horror movie couldn’t even attract an audience even with all the marketing and Comic-Con coverage by Summit Entertainment.
Kate Beckinsale’s Whiteout only managed a number seven debut with $5.1 million in the bank.
If it wasn’t for Tyler Perry, this weekend would have been just as bad as last weekend with a dismal box office to report. Next weekend doesn’t look much better with the arrival of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Informant hitting theaters.
