Box Office: Final Destination 4 Kills with $28.3M
Summer has finally ended. As Labor Day weekend approaches we begin a slow, painful descent into the lackluster fall movie season. May – August was a good run for the summer box office. Over one billion dollars in ticket sales isn’t too bad for one season is it? But all good things must eventually come to an end. The summer box office season has concluded this past weekend as the fourth Final Destination movie opened at number one. Titled The Final Destination (which makes me hope based on the title this will be the last film) was released in both regular and 3D formats with a strong $28.3 million debut. We can account the high opening weekend to the extra costs assessed with the 3D luxury. For a complete breakdown of this weekends box office continue reading.
It was a weekend for horror movies as both The Final Destination and Rob Zombie’s Halloween II arrived in theaters. The latter was a sequel to Zombie’s Halloween remake from 2007 which was a box office success. His sequel struggled to hold onto that audience as it mustered up only $17.4 million for a third place finish.
The number two spot went to last weekends champ. Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds held on nicely with only a 47% drop in week two. Basterds finished the Friday – Sunday haul with $20 million and a cumulative total of $73.7 million.
The number four spot went to District 9 which brought in another $10.7 million. After three weeks of release the low budget sci-fi flick has made $90.8 million and counting.
G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra took the number five spot pulling in $8 million. The action hit has grossed $132 million making it another big summer hit.
Get ready for the box office numbers to begin taking a downward spiral as next weekend’s movie choices are few and far between. Mike Judge’s comedy Extract opens. Along with Gerard Butler’s Gamer and Sandra Bullock in All About Steve.
The holidays cannot come soon enough.
