Comic-Con: Nightmare on Elm Street is Back
Yesterday Warner Brothers put on a very impressive panel featuring many of their upcoming projects over the next year or so. One segment included the writers, director, and star of the upcoming horror movie reboot Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger himself, Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) answered questions from the fans and debuted the first trailer for the film. This movie looks freakin’ awesome! Haley makes the perfect Krueger and definitely takes over the role from Robert Englund amazingly well. Fans were treated to the first look at Krueger’s face which is impressive to see how the look of this horror icon has improved over the years.
The trailer begins with Haley running down the street from an angry mob who corners him in a warehouse. He is shouting that he is innocent but the mob doesn’t care. They set him on fire and while he burns alive he rips off his jacket to unveil the iconic red and black striped sweater. The trailer is really scary and I am impressed with how Warner Brothers have brought this character back to the big screen.
Some interesting points to note from the panel are that Robert Englund will not make a cameo in this film. There had been speculation as to Englund’s involvement with the reboot, but the director denied any involvement from the actor. The producers also stated that this is not an origin story. It will show enough back story to engage the audience but the film will not trace his roots.
The producers for this film want to bring this character back to re-introduce him to a new, younger adult audience. Many people know who Freddy Krueger is as a movie character, but many people don’t know the entire story. Similar to this years Friday the 13th reboot, Nightmare on Elm Street should be a huge draw at the box office when it hits theaters April 30th, 2010!
