Fun Stuff: Green Lantern Bio
With DC Comics summer event Blackest Night about to kick off in July, we at Fanboyz wanted to fill you in on the Green Lantern Corp plus the others in the war of light. Some may be familiar with the name Green Lantern, but many do not know that there are actually seven other corps. In the coming days we will shed some light on the Sinestro Corps (Yellow), Red, Orange, Blue, Indigo, Star Sapphires (Violet) and the undead Black Lanterns. All of these bios will teach you about the war of light and the coming Blackest Night. First up the Manhunters, Guardians and the Green Lanterns.
The Oan’s are a race of immortal beings. They were among the first intelligent races in the known universe. In an attempt to keep all beings safe the Oan’s became the Guardians of the universe. They developed robotic police officers known as the Manhunters. “No man escapes the Manhunters” became a slogan feared by most. The Manhunters were good at their job and did so for thousands of years, but like all machines they had their issues. A fatal glitch in the programming caused the Manhunters to kill almost every single being in sector 666. The Guardians destroyed or dismantled all they could but some still exist today. With only five beings left alive in sector 666 they became know as the Five Inversions (More on them later). They vowed vengeance on the Guardians.
In a second attempt to keep the peace in the universe the Green Lantern Corps (GL’s) was formed. The Green Lantern Corps are a group of intergalactic police officers charged with the protection of the universe. A GL must be someone who has the ability to over come great fear. Green is said to be the color of ‘Will’. The Guardians divided up the universe into 3600 different sectors. Each sector is appointed two Green Lanterns to patrol it. The GL’s are fitted with a weapon unlike any other in existence, a green ring powered by the wearers own will power. This ring can basically manifest any construct the wearer can imagine. Each GL has a personal “power battery” that draws power from the main source on the planet Oa which gathers the “will” of the universe. They must use it to recharge their ring which lasts about 24 Earth ours. To recharge the rings each GL must recite the oath that the Guardians have bestowed upon them.
“In Brightest day, in Blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power… Green Lanterns light”.
I know that it sounds a bit weird, but let me tell you Green Lantern is one of the most consistently well written books. All of the other corps have their own oath that we will reveal in later days. Now that you have some back story on Green Lantern you can look forward to the other Corps bio we will have. If you have any questions or anything that you would like clarification on, please post your questions below.
