Movie Review: Land of the Lost

Film Summer Preview Comedy

Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) develops a machine that can take him to a parallel world. With his assistant Holly and a tourist trap owner Will (Danny McBride), this crew of misfits tackles a new world of mystery. Can they survive dinosaurs, lizard men and other fantastic creatures? You will have to watch and see.

Will Ferrell stars in yet another throw away project. I can say that I was entertained by this film. If you saw the trailer and expected some ridiculous film with bad CG and some laughable points then you will get what you are expecting. I used to watch the re-make of the TV show as a kid as well as some of the old Sid & Marty stuff and could appreciate some of the throw back humor to those series.  The T-Rex in the film looks as bad as it did in the trailer, but I don’t think anyone was expecting Jurassic Park. It’s funny that I am bashing on the CG when the Sleestaks (Lizard Men) costumes looked very campy yet I liked it. I guess that you can’t please everyone.  Did I need to see the film? No. This was just another average re-make.  The plot was very family friendly; however the rest of the film is not. There is plenty of adult subject matter as well as adult language. I am not sure to whom the film was trying to cater to, but I know it wasn’t families.

The shining part of this film was actor Danny McBride. We have seen him in films like Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express. He added a little extra to those movies and did so again with this one. He is the owner/operator of a tourist trap mystery spot. Marshall needs to get into the mystery spot to run a test but has to take the tour to get in. The mystery spot is a crap tourist site, but Will really tires to sell it. He puts all he has into it and no one appreciates it. At one point he wants to kill Marshall because he believes that he has gone mad and the best way to kill him is to throw rocks at him. If you were hoping for a mindless comedy then you will be happy with this movie.
