Steven Soderbergh is a brilliant director. His body of work includes the Oscar winning Traffic (for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director), Erin Brokovich, Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 as well as this year’s Girlfriend Experience. To say he is a versatile director would be an understatement. The man has brought audiences such an eclectic mix of movies it is hard to pin him to a specific genre. Today we have Soderbergh’s latest project starring Matt Damon. The Informant is a stylized comedy in the vain of the Coen brother’s Burn After Reading. The film stars Damon as Mark Whitacer, a corporate whistle blower who thinks by bringing down large corporations that he is some type of secret agent. The trailer is hilarious and brilliant. This is a must see.
Universal Pictures has released a trailer for their new comedy titled Couples Retreat. The ensemble cast includes Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Kristin Stewart, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman, and Jason Bateman. The movie is directed by Peter Billingsley and written by Jon Favreau. The movie is about four couples who travel to a resort island getaway for married couples facing problems. Only one of the couples is having marital problems, but all of the couples tag along for a vacation. Little do they know that all attendees must participate in all marriage counseling activities. This comedy looks like a fun movie about the problems we all face in our relationships. Check it out.
Matt Reeves, the director of last years Cloverfield, is gearing up for his next project. Let the Right One In is based upon the John Ajvide Lindqvist novel and is also a foreign released film which is now being remade for the U.S. Reeves recently spoke with the L.A Times and had the following to say: “I was just hooked,” Reeves told the newspaper. “I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror.” This remake is going to be retitled as Let Me In and interestingly enough is considering Colorado as a location to shoot the film.
Wow! I am so excited to see this movie. Youtube via AICN has a new international trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. After five days of release Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen became the second film in history to make $2oo million in five days. Of course, the first film being last summers The Dark Knight which made $203 million in the same amount of time. These numbers are so close that we won’t know the exact figure until tomorrow morning. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Transformers numbers dropped a little because I am sure that Paramount has embellished their numbers just a tad. They want to compete with The Dark Knight, and what better way to do so then making $200 million in five days. If you have been following our box office tracking reports we shared with you the huge opening day that Transformers 2 had with $60 million on opening day.
Since the birth of the Green Lantern concept in the 1940’s the series has been a comic sci-fi hit. As many series have their ups and downs, GL has been pretty consistent. However, great heroes need great enemies and I cannot fathom why it took so long for the creative minds to make the Sinestro Corps, the corps that wields the yellow ring. But why stop there? In today’s bio we leave will power and fear. Today, we look into rage and what kind of corps that creates. See the rage of the Red Lanterns after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
Many of you may not be aware who comedian Ricky Gervais is. I will tell you the man is hilarious. His stints on award shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes have been the highlights of some of those shows. The man is truly a gifted comedian. Last year he had a movie out that nobody really watched called Ghost Town with Greg Kinnear. This fall he is back with The Invention of Lying. The movie is about a world where everyone tells the truth. No lies at all. The word lie has not even been thought of. That is until Gervais figures out how to lie and then uses it to his advantage. Looks like a fun comedy. Check it out. The Invention of Lying hits theaters September 25th!
Sacha Baron Cohen’s new comedy Bruno premiered last night in Los Angeles. Unfortunately it premiered the same day that legendary musician Michael Jackson passed away. THR is reporting that Bruno included a scene where the title character interviews an unsuspecting LaToya Jackson (Michael’s sister) which included questions about her brother. The questions ranged from why his voice was so high to the implications of his use of the trademark white glove. Out of good taste (which is ironic seeing how this is Bruno), the filmmakers removed that scene out of respect for the late pop icon. Hollywood stood still yesterday as The King of Pop died from cardiac arrest and while it may bring more attention to the fact this scene was included, I think those behind the film are doing the right thing.
Next on our tour of the emotional spectrum is the color yellow. Green is said to be the color of “will” in the DC universe, but yellow is meant to be “fear”. What makes a person capable of being a Green Lantern (GL) is their ability to over come great fear. So intern what makes a better opponent than a group whose base function is to spread fear across the universe? Learn about Sinestro, the yellow light, Parallax, and more after the jump. The first trailer for a new vampire flick called Daybreakers has hit the net. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe and is set in the future in 2019 when a plague turns the world’s population into vampires. The human population is facing extinction due to the vampires overtaking the world. However, one group of covert vampires have learned that one of them could be the savior for humanity. This trailer looks awesome. I love the style of the camera work and the music really makes this film look creepy. Check this one out and tell us what you think.
Everyone should know about the story of pilot Amelia Earhart, the first pilot to ever cross the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane. What makes the Amelia Earhart story so fascinating is the mystery surrounding it. Earhart was set to fly solo around the world, but during her travel her plane disappeared and still to this day we have never known what happened to Amelia Earhart. Her story ended in 1937 when she disappeared during her trip circumnavigating the globe. Now her story is being told in a new movie with Hilary Swank as the famous female pilot. This is a great role for Swank who is now shooting for a third Academy Award. Check out the trailer for Amelia after the jump.
When the news broke yesterday that Michael Jackson had been rushed to the hospital suffering cardiac arrest the news outlets were quick to jump the gun on this story. In the world of websites and online news, it is all about driving traffic to your website; and as news of the passing of Jackson, the world turned to the internet for details. I was reluctant to run anything at first. I wanted the news to sink in a little more than it unfortunately had. What do you say when arguably the most famous musician in the modern era dies? How do you report that? There is no need to report it. There is no need to give details surrounding his death. Everything is speculation and most media reports are anxious to jump the gun in order to have the first scoop of details. TMZ was the first to report that Jackson had indeed died. All other media outlets had only confirmed he was rushed to the hospital. By now everyone has read what happened. By now the news has spread the world like a rapid wild fire. So what do we do as fans, and most importantly, as human beings? We remember the legacy this man left behind. That is how we honor him. That is how we should remember him. That is what we will do on this site.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is continuing it’s box office domination as the film took in another $28.6 million on Thursday. After two days of release the blockbuster sequel has already made $89.2 million. We still have three more days left for its opening weekend numbers and at the pace it is going I would expect another $75 – 80 million Friday – Sunday. That would put the film in the range of $164 – $170 million for the first five days of release. It would be right around the five days openings of Spider Man 3 ( $169.4M) and Star Wars Episode III ( $172.8M). Have you seen Transformers 2 yet? Leave us some feedback on our Transformers discussion. We want to know what you think!
1970’s icon Farrah Fawcett has died at the age of 62 after battling cancer for three years. The actress, who is best known as Jill Munroe from Charlie’s Angels, had been battling cancer off and on for the last three years. Fawcett was a sex symbol for a generation of boys who grew up watching her in Charlie’s Angels as well as movies like Cannonball Run, The Apostle, and Logan’s Run. Her official website posted the following statement today: I am sorry to say our Farrah has passed to a better place and left the pain and confines of her bed behind. She is free to be the woman we all knew and loved. So Few have touched so many. You all keep Fighting the Fight. Fawcett was survived by long time partner Ryan O’ Neal and son Redmond O’ Neal. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family.
Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly is back with his newest film titled The Box. Starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, and Frank Langella, The Box is an adaptation of a short story called Button, Button by Richard Matheson. Set in the 1970’s Diaz and Marsden play a married couple who are struggling financially. One day a mysterious box appears on their doorstep. A stranger (Langella) later arrives to explain the significance of the box which contains a device with a button. If they press the button, one stranger, somewhere in the world, will die. By doing this they will receive one million dollars in cash. The plot for the film balances on the idea of what would you do for money and looks to be quite the thrill ride. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think.
Yesterday I gave you my box office predictions for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The blockbuster sequel opened yesterday with $16 million in ticket sales from midnight showings and after a full day of release the Michael Bay directed sequel broke the Wednesday release record with $60 million on opening day. That is about $16 million more than the previous record holder which was Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix which opened with $44 million in 2007. It was reported earlier this morning that Revenge of the Fallen had took in $55 million, but now Variety has raised that number to an even more impressive $60 million. As a reminder, The Dark Knight took in $67.2 million opening day last summer, so Transformers 2 is not too far behind that. Check back with us as we track the box office for Transformers 2 all week long.

Director Zack Snyder’s graphic novel adaptation of Watchmen will be returning to select theaters next month with an exclusive director’s cut. Watchmen was released this past March and clocked in at almost three hours in it’s original entirety. Now the director’s cut will include an additional 25 minutes of new footage. When Watchmen was released there was a rumor that Snyder would be releasing a director’s cut this summer so fans could see his original cut of the film. So if you don’t live in those cities you will have to wait until the DVD and Blu-Ray hits stores on July 21st.
