Todd McFarlane Interested in Another Spawn Movie
Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, is interested in bringing back the Spawn character for another big screen movie. This week has seen several older franchises being re-booted, and here is another movie to add to the list. During a premiere for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, IESB spoke with McFarlane who told them he has five offers on the table to do another Spawn movie. These offers range from big budget studios to a smaller independent take on the movie which would give McFarlane more control over his project. The original Spawn movie debuted in August of 1997. The film was an adaptation of McFarlane’s comic book and was directed by Mark Dippe.
The 1997 Spawn was a critical and box office disappointment. I can’t really wrap my head around the idea to re-boot this. Does anyone really care about a new Spawn movie? The original film was about a mercenary that is killed, but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil. McFarlane told IESB he would like to have more creative control with the movie to which he said, ” would keep it down, keep it dark, keep it grungy.” This is definitely what Spawn fans are looking for, but at this point in time does anyone really care?
McFarlane, who was an artist for the Spider-Man comics, left Marvel in the early 1990′s and formed Image Comics. Under that publisher he released a comic book series with his character Spawn. The comics were well received by fans who enjoyed McFarlane’s art. McFarlane is clearly a very creative individual and the Spawn movie did not do justice to the character and art that he created. For those of you who do not know, McFarlane has gone on to create a series of detailed action figures which are very popular among collectors.
For those of you who are Spawn fans, or those of you who are not, how do you feel about a possible re-boot for Spawn? I am not really sure I would even call this a re-boot, but rather a re-try, at making this movie a success. If McFarlane has more creative control could this film work? Would audiences receive this movie as well as they do with traditional comic book characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men? Share with us your thoughts below.
