After directing three very popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies, director Gore Verbinski has confirmed he will not be returning for a fourth film. Variety is reporting that Verbinksi has instead opted to direct a video game adaptation of Bioshock. The Pirates movies have grossed a whopping $2.6 billion worldwide. The movies, based on the Disney World theme park ride, starred Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightly. The fourth movie was scheduled to begin filming next year. Verbinksi stated, “I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.” No word yet who will step into direct the project. I don’t think the success of the Pirates movies were because of Verbinksi, but I am curious how a new director will handle the big budget epic style of this series.
