Groundhog Day director, Harold Ramis, recently told MTV that we will soon see a Broadway production of his hit 1993 comedy. The movie starred Bill Murray as weatherman, Phil Connors who after reporting on the events of Groundhog Day, finds himself living the day over and over again. Harold Ramis, who is promoting his new comedy, Year One, sat down with MTV News and had this to say about the musical. “Danny Rubin, who wrote the original script, has been working on a book for a musical.”  Famed Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd) has shown interest in adapting the movie into a musical.

Ramis went on to say, “when it comes to the musical aspects, I’ll hold out hope that Sondheim joins in. Stephen Sondheim was asked what film he would turn into a musical and he said ‘Groundhog Day.’” And I said, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool.’ James Lapine, who directed a lot of Sondheim, actually contacted me and asked if I’d thought about a ‘Groundhog Day’ musical.”

This news is still not confirmed but it appears there may be something in the works. Ramis was quite candid when talking about the idea of turning his movie into a musical. He believies that if the right people are on board this could be a success. What do you think? Could this beloved comedy work as a Broadway musical? Leave your thoughts below.
