Director David Cronenberg is looking into directing a sequel to his 2007 film Eastern Promises. The film starred Viggo Mortensen as a Russian gangster named Nikolai. Mortensen’s performance was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. Cronenberg tells MTV that, “We are moving forward with it,” and that, “We are all excited about doing a sequel.” Eastern Promises is about a Russian teenager living in London who dies during childbirth and leaves clues to a midwife in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family. Cronenberg had previously directed Mortensen in the critically acclaimed film, The HIstory of Violence.

Cronenberg believes that there is more to see with Mortensen’s character. “It’s the first time I’ve ever been in a situation where I actually want to do a sequel to something,” he admitted. “I’ve never had the desire to do that before. But in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didn’t feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie.”

When we hear more about Cronenberg’s sequel to Eastern Promises we will be sure to bring it to you.
