Remake Alert: The Never Ending Story Lives Up to It’s Name

How many Never Ending Stories can Hollywood make? Well they apparently have room for at least one more. The original Never Ending Story was released in 1984 and spawned two sequels as well as a television series. This film based on a German children’s book follows a troubled boy who dives into a wondrous fantasy world through the pages of a mysterious book. The original film was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and the new film is going to be produced by the Kennedy/Marshall Company who produced The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
According to the Hollywood Reporter the new Never Ending Story will take a more modern approach to the story. I am not entirely sure what that means since the story is based on an old children’s book, so I would assume the modern approach would be over-the-top special effects.
I was a fan of the original movie as a child. It had a exciting story, and for the time, good special effects. My only reservation with the idea to remake this; is that I feel the original film is such a children’s classic it is unnecessary to remake. The original stands on it’s own as a piece of film history and by remaking it, I am afraid the new story will lose the magic that the original created so well. Then again, I may just be living in my childhood memories, and this would be a good opportunity for a new generation to experience The Never Ending Story.
What do you think? Is Hollywood getting carried away with all these remakes?
