Remake Alert: A New Total Recall?

Hollywood just wants to remake all the classic films from the 80′s and 90′s don’t they? First The Never Ending Story and now Total Recall? Our next post will be: Hollywood set to remake The Godfather. Just saying that upsets me. Anyways, it appears that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sci-fi adventure, Total Recall will be seeing a modern remake. Total Recall was released in 1990 and is based on the science fiction short story by Phillip K. Dick. His short story was actually titled, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. Weird, I know. Total Recall made over $260 million world wide so it will be interesting to see if Hollywood can bank on that success one more time.
Total Recall is about Douglas Quaid who is haunted by a recurring dream about a journey to Mars. He hopes to find out more about this dream and buys a holiday at Rekall Inc. where they sell implanted memories. But something goes wrong with the memory implantation and he remembers being a secret agent fighting against the evil Mars administrator Cohaagen.
Does this movie really require a remake? It was released in 1990. That doesn’t seem long enough to warrant another film, however, Hollywood is always looking to rebooot successful franchises. Look at the success of Friday the 13th for example. There is plenty of money to be made, I just hope it is not at the cost of quality.
